I'am an 18 year old girl. I have never known what I have wanted to do with my life. I would always cover it with saying I want to be a writer. But the was false. I have always wanted to be an actress. Always I would always pretend I would be this famous actress in my head. I have not gotten my diploma...college is in a couple of weeks. And for the first time in my life. I know what I want to do. I want to be a professional actress. I have never been in plays or in anything. It must sound crazy but i knoe i have talent. Its something that is natural to me. I practice being a actress in my room dreaming im in antoher place and pretending to be another character. I dont know how to tell my family they want me to go to college....in order to be an actress i would habe to move to L.A. i live in texas i know i must move....please help.

Don't tell them. Just pack your **** and go. Then call them from L.A. and scream into the phone, "Guess where I am, mom and dad!"

Parents love it when you take the initiative like that.

Yeh...

Which diploma do you not have yet? High school? Is that a problem in terms of college?

If you take a year off from college, say, what are the repercussions? Will you be able to start next year (fall 2008) under the same terms that you would have started this year (fall 2007)?

If it needs saying, it's incredibly reckless to torpedo your college education based on only your own hunch about your acting ability as opposed to any actual feedback.

As in, either find out whether you have any acting ability before you go or find out what your options are in terms of delaying college in case the acting thing doesn't work out and you decide to go back to college. Preferably find out BOTH before making any decisions.

I used to live in L.A. Do you have ANY idea how many 18-year-olds convinced of their own wonderfulness have shown up there and haven't even been able to find a waitressing job, much less any actual acting (or modeling) work?

Does porn count as acting?

I was gonna say, but I thought that was a little too depressing or worse, would give her ideas...

I tell you, people can't even get regular porn jobs! All that's really left for all those starry-eyed lasses is the hardcore fetish weirdo stuff that nobody else is willing to do.

(I lived in L.A. AND I was in the job placement trade. Not that I placed anyone in porn jobs, Shocked but I was well aware of hiring trends across the board.)

Being an actress is a lofty goal. I'm sure you have the enthusiasm and talent to get there. I'm also sure you are smart enough to realize that your chances of becoming a successful actress are slim. It may be a good idea to first go to college and get trained in something else so as to pay the bills while attaining your actress goal. It costs money to live, to get yourself to auditions and to hae portfolios made, etc. L.A. is an expensive place to live and you sure don't want to end up on the street. Too many girls end up hooking and can't get out of it just because they had a great dream.

Please!!! be smart. Get an education first, that way you'll always have a legal way to make money.

This was posted by someone else a while ago. Hmmm

Something similar had quite a discussion which, I'm afraid, ended up in some levity. Link:

Education doesn't have to preclude acting. Many prominent actors came out of college or university drama departments, across the US, and surely in Britain; I don't know about other places.

Go to college, get a good general education, take a beginning drama course or two or three, and see how your interests develop.

Some actors come from the stage -- check your local theater group -- even a bit part is the first step through a door. I had drama classes from high school right up through college, but mostly participated in set design and lighting.

well, no you don't

there are actors all over the world - not just in California

~~~
Begin by acting where you are.
~~~

perhaps you could try out for some plays locally - see how it goes - take a couple of courses in what was once (is it still?) called theatre arts

~~~
If things go well, either on stage or in class, it won't be such a surprise to your family when you tell them of your plans.
april,
i'm 17 and i live in texas as well. i've told my parents already that i want to act. but what you have to decide is do you want to act in hollywood or on broadway. (movies or stage) for me the choice was easy, broadway. but getting there is always difficult. right now i'm planning to go to college and study history and theatre. i started acting at age 6 doing bit roles and a few starring roles around my community. what you should do as someone already mentioned is get involved with theatre groups in your area. and if you decide that stage acting isn't for you, well then at least you'll have had experience in acting before you move yourself to hollywood.
