Dutch Herring Reviewers Threatened
By TOBY STERLING
04.07.07

There's something fishy afoot in the world of Dutch herring.

The newspaper Algemeen Dagblad said Wednesday it has received anonymous threats against several of its journalists, threatening to kill them if the paper publishes its 26th annual herring stand review.

The review has become the prime authority on fish merchants in a nation where pickled herring has been the national treat for centuries.

By tradition, Dutch connoisseurs dip the fish in onions and then dangle them above their mouths with one hand before taking a chomp.

Other habits vary by region.

"In Amsterdam, they cut off the tail and always use 'sour' (pickle juice)," Horvius said. "In the south, they like them green (almost raw). In the east, they're more briny."

The Algemeen Dagblad's team consists of a reporter accompanied by the former director of the country's Food and Wares Agency, who examines a stand's cleanliness, and by a fish biologist who takes samples back to the lab to test for bacteria and freshness.

The 102 stands reviewed got the results under embargo last week, in order to give those whose fish stank a chance to respond.

"Experience teaches us that a good report can have a large positive influence" on a vendor's business, reporter Paul Horvius said. He added that he was surprised by the threats because a negative review doesn't matter as much as a positive one.

AD spokesman Ruben Maas said the paper would publish regardless of the threats, which it was taking "extremely seriously."

Rotterdam police declined to comment on whether they viewed vendors with bad reviews as potential suspects - they're casting a wide net.

I think this thread wins this month's prize for the most unusual title.

There's just something about Dutch. When you read it aloud, it always sounds like they're doing nothing but swearing, even if they're only talking abut herring.

Those Dutch are so tough. In Australia, a restaurant reviewer gets sued for a bad review, but in the Netherlands the threat is death! Wow.

I'm sure the newspapers sales take a leap today, too ... not that that has anything to do with the reporting ...

Did The Prophet like herring? Did he consider it the polar opposite of swine? Is there some sura in the Koran that warns against the castigation of herring or its producers?

Considering all the other death threats in Holland, I figure that there must be a jihadist lurking somewhere within the herring (or maybe it's pickle) industry.

Trying to be funny, Finn, or just showing your ignorance?

Since the early Middle Ages (1380) the Netherlands are famous for a special treat of the herring, known in English as soused herring.

You get "Hollandse nieuwe" on any street corner, more frequently than than you a hot dog stand in any place in the USA.

It's really a big and important industry - this is how the AD sees it:

They give 10 points for the best, 0 for the worst ... of those 100 haring sellers, they've tested. And for some, I can imagine, it's really very bad for the business

Today's AD, pages 25-26 (reports about/from the test runs on several more pages)

(And Finn: there were two Dutch shopping who looked like Muslims ... and opposite that shop is the local synagogue.)

The only herring I've ever had is the pickled stuff in a jar.

I do like it though.
Not something you can eat much of because of the salt.

Walter....the herring, like in the video, what do they taste like?

Apparantly it's something you can eat a lot of.

I wonder where you can get this in the States?

They taste .... kind of oily-dry marinated. And a bit salted.

Excellent in this hot weather.

While the Dutch eat them with their fingers and mostly just a roll with it, the trditional German way is a meall, with two or thre of those herrings, fresh gren beans [the reason that it is beans wasindeed that beans were the only fresh vegetable atound May/June] and potatoes with bacon sauce.

Well, they aren't soooo salty, the good ones, at least.
