Thanks for the heads up, osso. I posted a couple of pics of the plaza, which hopefully they'll enjoy. Never know about us old farts, we've seen so much already it takes a lot to turn our cranks.

At the same time, I thought you might enjoy seeing where I lived in Madrid, though I don't know why you should.

I think the following link will work, and if it does you'll see a cluster of arrows with various street names in the lower part of the street view. Click on the uppermost arrow (the one pointing up) and the view will advance up Doctor Fleming, our street. About three clicks of the arrow will get you about even with our building, set back in the trees. You can use the small navigation thingy in the upper left corner to rotate the view. We were on the 4th floor, facing Doctor Fleming. The concrete monstrosity on the right-hand side of the street wasn't there in my day. Our view was over open parkland for a quarter-mile to the Castellana thoroughfare, a central north-south artery.

BTW, vPike.com is a rather handy website for snooping around streets in various old stomping grounds. Or just about anywhere, actually.

@Debacle,
Smooches, Debacle, that's a wonderful website. Especially since I now can't use Google maps street view (failure yet again to upgrade Adobe Flash since I can't).

It's great fun to see where you lived in Madrid!

@ossobuco,
It definitely is a good site, osso. Just enter a street address, city, state or country, and it'll take you there, so long as it's on their huge data base. You can enter approximate addresses, for instance, 34th and 5th Ave., NY, NY, and you're whisked to the Empire State Building at street level. You can then use the up and down arrows on the small navigational device to get an elevated view of the building. Good fun.

@Debacle,
This could bring many happy hours and it's all your fault.

Meantime, I'm having a glass of very light beer - Pacifico Clara. Next time I'll buy a six pack of Negra Modelo:

@Debacle,
I remember walking on Gran Via, and seeing the main postoffice with huge sculptures on the building. That was in 1996 when I traveled through Salamanca, Avila, Fatima, Lisbon, Seville, Torremolinos, Granada, Toledo, and back to Madrid. Almost forgot, we also visited Gibraltar and Tangiers on that trip.

@cicerone imposter,
That's a beautiful area of Madrid, c.i. Where the Gran Via joins Calle de Alcala is Plaza de Cibeles with its enormous fountain, in front of the main post office. Paseo del Prado also runs into Cibeles, and the Palace Hotel, which was Hemingway's favorite roost and the setting for his notorious three-hour lunches, is in that same area, across from the Prado.

You obviously made a grand tour of Spain. Avila and Toledo were probably my favorite spots for daytrips, along with El Escorial and Aranjuez. I bought a very nice sword in Toledo. Never used it: it just hangs on the family room wall beside an ancient world map; one of those with "There Be Dragons" printed on the edge where the New World would eventually take it's place.
