Grass would be kind of funky cool. I'll have to wander around that one for a bit. I couldn't find it on Home Depot's web site.

Those are some cool rubber floors, osso! Thanks for all of the links.

I'll have to give rubber the sniff test, I guess. I see a lot of it in places these days and have never noticed an odor problem. I see from BBB's link that "virgin rubber" is odor-free. Perhaps that is what is being used for flooring.

I'd be surprised if the Pirelli stuff has an odor, it's used extensively in buildings. Have no clue about the rest.

We have these soft rubber coating on some of the playgrounds and
in the summer with the sun hitting the floor all day long, it does smell,
despite being outdoors. So I only can imagine what it would smell like in
an indoor room.

I didn't mean literally the stuff they have on playgounds but something soft like that. There seems to be a variety of rubber materials available. I just need to find some to sniff. Rubber would be idea. They make a lot of stuff for interior use.

I think we've arrived at a "theme".

We were out furniture shopping today and Mo fell head over heels for this chest of drawers and a stool that were made up like a mechanic's bench: black metal with diamond plating drawer faces.

I don't know if we can afford those extravagantly priced items but I think we can knock them off for a kind of retro-auto body shop kind of vibe.

I think we're going to put sheets of diamond plating over the cruddy walls, do some "showroom" lineoleum checkerboard flooring (cream and green?), I have an old black and silver work bench that Mr. B confinscated for his offices that I'm going to reclaim for a desk, I have some black rubber anti-fatigue mats......

We're looking at a black metal bed that has a bunk on top and a futon sofa/full bed on the bottom.....

I don't really want to go "cutesy/themey" since he'll have to spend several years with our choices.....

What else might fit into our retro-garage? Any ideas?

toolboxes to put his valuable stuff in?

also, I saw on a show these guys who did their bathroom a la gym, with lockers for their personal items.

Garage mechanics need lockers to put their coats and jackets in, right?

Lockers would be way cool!

I know a place you can usually find them salvage -- for cheap. Those half lockers (one up, one down) would be especially handy.

I'm going to see what I can find.

Thanks, Chai!

As for the coveralls.....

Mo would probably totally dig it.

Maybe I can find mechanic inspired pajamas.

When he gets to the Guy Friend age the mothers of his Guy Friends are going to hate you.

"But Mo has this neat bedroom. Why can't I have...."

Guy Friends. I'm dying for guy friends.

Mo is currently in loooovvvvveeee with a (different) girl at school that he likes to hug and he writes her letters saying "I love you".

She hugs him back and says she loves him too.

Argh.

She's a wonderful kid though. She's going through a hard time right now and hearing "I love you" from people is probably very nice.

I think his room will be cool. The ideas are coming together.

And of course, we're thinking of moving to the other side of town.............

The room is getting very close to finished. What an ordeal!

Mo thinks it is very cool. One of his friends came over today and just stood in the doorway with her mouth hanging open before pronouncing it "the coolest room ever".

Here's what has been done so far:

Black and white checked floor. (Waiting for fat rubber baseboard to be installed.)
Part galvanized steel walls (we couldn't afford the diamond plate)
Part green, orange, yellow and white walls -- graffiti style.
Black metal bunkbed/futon with red leatherette cover. Silver/black/blue bed clothes.
"Flamed" dresser (black and sliver with yellow and red flames).
Crazy lighting.

I know, I know, it sounds completely nutty but honestly it isn't as wild as it sounds. It is the anti-zen room in my pretty zen house though.

We've still got some finishing touches to do but we're nearly there and still a bit under budget. I might be able to buy those lockers after all!!

The best part: Mo is finally sleeping in his own room, every night, all night long.

Sounds terrific, and I hope you post some pictures of it.
Great side effect that Mo is sleeping in his own room now - I guess that
was the reason you remodeled in the first place.

Okay! Okay!

I just thought....

I was going to turn some old office chairs, you know the kind with the lift on them, into tables, by removing the seats and attaching some kind of table top. Maybe I can do chrome table tops!

Now, where to find chrome disks?

chrome and smoke glass? Black is better with chrome

A chrome ring with L shapes welded on to them to support the glass?

hub caps?.......

Chrome tyre rims set horizontally onto the office chairs, one side filled in with glass to make the table top.

Hub caps! Now that's a fun idea. Those would be about the right size too!

I'll need to take the chair apart this afternoon and look at it a bit to see how things could be affixed to the base. A hubcap with glass cut to fit would be totally cool.

Thanks dadpad!

Or what about a bicycle wheel, maybe even leaving the tire on? I have an old bike I could take apart for parts.
