He gave the OK for Satan to try a lot more than that. We are all in the same position as Job.
I can understand how and why you would blame God for allowing Satan all this time to prove his point vis a vis mankind. But, there is a reason for it. Part of the answer is found in the conversations that take place between God and Satan in the beginning of the book.
