Good morning, dag.
I just discovered this thread & want to add my very best wishes, too.
I'm seriously on the run this morning, but have managed read as far as your letter to Senator Kerry. It frustrates the hell out of me not having the time to read through to page 16!
But later, later ...
In the meantime, good luck, dag!

GOOD LUCK!

Oh no nimh!

There must be SOMEONE I could write a letter to...! (Can you tell I've written many, many letters of this sort in my lifetime? Thing is, just enough of them have happy results to keep me at it...)

Dissolved?!? WTF? Where am I going to go for my news on Kosovo? Or Roma? I object! And whaddya mean I cannot write a letter on your case? I sure as hell can. There must be someone up there or a committee or a network of people, who decide these things. Couldn't I tell them how valuable the service your team offers is to me? I'm on a roll, few more letter cannot hurt!

Olga, you are up to date enough if you read as far. Like I was saying, if all these good wishes don't work, I dunno what would!

Anyway, thats enough disturbance for your thread. In the meantime, everyone help Dag - at least one of us should end up lucky! Razz

It most certainly does, nimh. I can't write letters, but I can cross fingers, toes, eyes, and such things - consider them crossed.

Anything I might write would not be apt to help.

But. waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. so many of us need you and your brains.

If they, whoever they is, think they can skipalong past real life analysis,

as that by you,

they're looking to a fall.

Hey,nimh, maybe we can establish an organization of our own. I mediate, you monitor. Or something like that. I have a third person, a journalist who's at home in war and post-conflict situations, who doesn't know what to do with self. She is moving to Rwanda though. Just to see what next.

Aw, nimh! What the hell is going on around this place (earth)?

I sent this to capuano:

Quote:

Why is America restricting immigration of foreigners with exceptional talents? It frustrates me. I am a descendant of Italian immigrants. They were simple people: shoemakers and farmers. Yet, they were accepted, they made good and became valuable citizens. My family housed exchange students throughout my childhood. This taught me the value of inter-cultural exchange which I feel is increasingly important in our current political and economic climate.

I have known many people from other countries who have studied here at our best schools. They are being turned away from our country. They are being sent home. They spend countless hours untangling the process of visa applications. They shoot in the dark with the green card lottery. My house mate is a brilliant Slovak woman who has been jumping through hoops for years. She's following all the rules, fulfilling all the requirements, paying all the fees. She's being told that she has a 1 in 8 chance of getting an H1-B visa. That there will be a lottery. After all that work her fate will be decided by a lottery! She is an asset to the Brookline-based international and ethnic concilliation organization she works for. It would be a shame to see her talent, so needed in today's world, go elsewhere.

I am hoping that our country can reverse this restrictive immigration trend. I have been reading of the shortages of skilled laborers. I am hoping our elected officials can address the issue by immediately raising the visa caps and eventually reconfiguring the whole visa application process.

Thank you for your time

Ted Kennedy is the Chairman of the Senate Immigration Committee (I erroneously gave that title to Durbin previously). As a Massachusetts resident, I think he might be on your list, l'k.

Aww, thanks. Written from scratch and all!
I have no idea how I would cope without A2K.

I printed fancy snail mail letters to Kennedy, Capuano, Kerry and McCain.

turns out Capuano's office has helped many scholars and scientists before. Hopefully they'll notice me. They have a person especially for handling immigration cases.

Capuano is a good guy. So it would seem. From what I know.....

They said that due to the white powder (I have forgotten!) scare, the snail mail into the governmental offices is very slow. Send emails, make phone calls.

I'm sending it to his district office in Cambridge. I may go see that Kate person that deals with immigration cases there.

Meanwhile, I dont want to break up the spirit, but I'm afraid that posting in this thread must have messed up my personal mojo, as it turns out that your kind of problem (very roughly categorised) can apparently be acutely contagious.

You know how I raved about how brilliantly - ok, how fairly well - it's worked out for my marvellous boss to keep directing our small team even now she's moved back? Well, one thing I didnt mention, because it would have muddied up my point and was irrelevant to it, is that she did turn in her resignation a few months ago (though of course she'd keep on working till a replacement/solution was found). It wasnt that working from England didnt work out or caused problems, it was something else (that I wont go into here) that made her give up, to our great sadness.

Anyway, because of that (a new person like her is very hard to find, and a program stands or falls with its director), and because one of the two new projects we would be working on this year was first cancelled, then approved after all, but without specification yet of who would carry it out, we have been in some uncertainty about our future - it looked very bleak back in January.

But since then, with our other big project not just fully budgeted and approved, but already in advanced state of preparation (we went to London twice in the last two months - well, me once - to establish the methodology); with that second new project at least approved in principle; and with a third still scheduled to take the rest of the year, we all believed we were safe for 2007, and had a fair chance for the year(s) after.

Well, today bomb shell news from on high was that our program will be dissolved, and the projects we are doing now split up and divvied up among other programs. There is no news, and no certainty whatsoever, what this will mean for us. We could be out of work by the end of the year. We could be out of work in a few months' time. We could be split up as a team and reassigned to other programs in the building - or in other places (eg London).

Like you, I love my job - it is absolutely the single perfect job I could have. I like the work a lot, its exactly in my corner, a combination of tasks and topics written for me - I love the team, we must be the most tight and joyful team in the building, I love my boss, love the flexible working arrangements - and of course I adore living in this city, being at home here.

Vice versa, I havent got the faintest clue where I'd even start looking for another job. I dont have a marketable profession - I know a little about this and a little about that and a little about such-and-so, and this job happens to require exactly that combination and that's why I landed it. But if I'd have to compete in any of those individual fields, I wouldnt stand a chance. I dont want to go to London, and I most definitely dont want to go back home. Ive made two friends here that are better than any friend I had at home and a bunch of acquaintances. But I dont speak Hungarian (beyond the basic pub-conversation level) so work opportunities here are very limited - etc etc etc.

So this sucks monumentally.

Unfortunately, nobody can write letters for me.. we just have to wait and see. I hate wait-and-seeing. We should know more in about three weeks' time. Perhaps.

Anyway, thats enough disturbance for your thread. In the meantime, everyone help Dag - at least one of us should end up lucky! Razz

Oh bugger, Nimh.

I do hope something equally wonderful turns up soon.

I don't suppose you and Daggles coud tell us more about what you actually DO?
