I heard it! (Thanks for the link, lil'k!)

I think you sounded just fine, dag. Intelligent & knowledgable, but not too superior. Just how you'd want to come across. Good job.

Funny, you don't have any accent at all here on A2K. Laughing

If it's any consolation, the experience is unpleasant only for oneself. (I occasionally used to give classical piano concerts as a teenager, and my"blech" reflex on hearing myself was the same as yours and Sozobe's.) From my perspective as a disinterested observer, your appearance went very well indeed.

For one thing, past experience has taught me that when people call into a radio show, few of them ever rise above incoherent drivel. I couldn't care less about accents or trembling voices, and doubt that any other listener would.

Second, your accent is negligible. Plenty of native speakers diverge farther from standard American English than you do. And what's most important, you made your points clearly, in concise, grammatical language, with a voice that immediately invites sympathy. In the end, that's what counts.

You could have held your ground not just as a caller, but as a regular participant in that show. Don't let little things make you self-conscious about your appearance!

Dagmar -- this may be a stupid question, but have you or your lawyers considered applying for an EB-1 Green Card? Don't be intimidated by pompous language about "extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, business, or athletics ...". Actually, the specific criteria the uscis lays out later could be reasonably easy to meet for someone like you. For example, take point 4: "Evidence that the alien has judged the work of others, either individually or on a panel". In academia, there is always some obscure conference, some start-up academic journal looking for peer-reviewers. It would surprise me if your field was an exception. Couldn't your Harvard background satisfy the Department of Homeland Security that you meet their definition of an "outstanding academic" in the field of journalism?

Oooh!

That looks promising!

I mean there might be some hidden no way no how but from what you say there...

Very promising!

Ya. Your instant, though clearly unplanned response to a question you were asked was indicative of a razor sharp mind... not someone unsure of themselves.

So... this op-ed that I wrote... My friend was going to help me, but her grandfather just died. She is completely out of it. I would love someone to look at it, but I'm not sure I can post it here if I intend to have it published somewhere. But, more importantly, where should I turn to? NYT? Boston Globe? And who do I talk to? Domestic news editor? Letters to the editor (does anyone read those?)
signed,

clueless in Cambridge.

Yeah, I thought it could be a some sort of something against some rules of some sort...

that's how much i know about that subject..

soz, if you're around and would have a minute, could i send it to you perhaps? please don't feel obliged in any way though, i'll totally understand if you're busy.

And once again, I have to thank everyone for sticking with me through this journey. I consider myself very lucky.

Just saw this -- Roberta's by far the more qualified, anyway. If you'd like a second pair of eyes I'd be happy to help though.

Soz, I suggested that dag get a second pair of eyes, namely yours. I did a line edit, but I had some overall concerns you might be better at resolving.

Thanks so much, ladies. I'm trying to rework it a bit, with Roberta's main points in mind. I have to decide whether it will be primarily a personal sob story, or a discussion of the reform bill. Both just don't fit well into one piece.
Anyone can write on the reform bill, I reckon. So I'm making a royal mess out of the personal sob story. I'm bad at those.
...in any case, I'm sure I'll need more help, it seems... Unfortunately the main rush has passed, I'm mostly tired and disillusioned at this point, which is not very conducive to motivation. But I'll try my best.

He, come on - there's really no need, no reason to be tired and disillusioned about this.

(Though a bit of sleep is always good, even for young ladies  )

I'm not sooooo sure the personal cannot be inserted in short form in a reform bill discussion; perhaps only a bit at the end about who the aurthor is... or perhaps as the leading paragraph, or two, or three. Dunno...

Or the flip side of that, a longer personal story, with the reform bill problem mentioned in the end paragraphs - that could be better.

I think the second option is the way to go, Osso. I had it about 50:50 and that was distracting and confusing.

Walter, I'm not so tired of writing, more because of the whole visa mess. The euphoria of activism can only go so far, then one burns out and depression sets in.

Well, I'm not THAT depressed. But I don't feel like writing letters and campaign anymore either. It's done, I'm afraid. I and many others have made the point, the decision will come soon. I can only wait.
Though I will finish this op-ed thing, the last thing I'll do.

I haven't seen it yet, but my suggestion is:

Start with personal (15%)
Segue quickly and smoothly to technical (discussion of reform bill) (75%)
End with personal, preferably with a direct reference/metaphor/image/theme from the first section. (10%)
