Tortilla Warmers and Tea Cozies

Yesterday I ventured down the frozen driveway to find a tea cozy--or the makings of a tea cozy. (First, a tea pot, then a tea cozy....I'm an insatitiable materialist.)

At this time of year the "artistic" souvenir shops are only open on weekends and I have enough personal esteem that I don't need an expensive tea cozy to bolster my ego.

I hit the Dollar Stores, hoping to find either pot holders which could be stitched together or kid's knit caps which wouldn't need stitching.

The only insulating objects available were tortilla holders and if I turn them inside out (so the colorful hot peppers are next to the shivering tea pot and the blue gingham lining is exposed) and slit a few seams, I'll have warmer tea for longer.

Still...Mexican cooking is a bit of a mystery to me. How does one use a tortilla holder for tortillas?

Dang if I know, Noddy. The only tortilla warmers I've ever seen were ceramic, and you'd have a rough row to hoe, trying to turn them inside out.

The best way to serve a tortilla, by the way, is to toss it onto a gas burner and flip it as soon as the first side begins to char. That's right. It goes right on the bare burner.

Tortilla warmers are made to sell, not to use.

I warm my tortillas in the microwave. I put 'em in my tortilla warmer first. Makes it easy to warm a bunch at a time.

Noddy can't you knit a tea cozy?

Tortilla warmer? I have no room for such neo-modern utensils.

I warm them in the microwave too, only as many as needed, with paper towels in between (otherwise they stick). I've never seen a tortilla warmer but from what Swimpy says I think I might like one.

Ah, we always get them in Mexican restaurants. Here they are

Although I don't need one, we don't eat that many tortillas.

I have one like this at home:

A philosophical question has tortured Mexicans over the ages:
The tortilla on top is never as warm as the others. So, couldn't they just skip the tortilla at the top?

Now, that's a tortillero, or "tortilla warmer".

Tortilla holder? Hmmm. That's the little flexible palm mat, ain't it?
We never use'em.

CJ--

I am a woman void of domestic skills. I can manage a bit of embroidery if I must, but knitting, crocheting, tatting and the other useful crafts are beyond me.

I admit to being a stubborn child, but I was a left handed, stubborn child and not particularly coordinated. My mother, aunts and older cousins were all right handed.

And I thought you would compete with Martha Stewart, Noddy.
You're so competent and knowledgable, it never occurred to me, you
wouldn't be the same with domestic matters.

Look at this one, isn't it cute?

Yep, I have one like the picture CJane posted. I avoided buying one, thinking it was not a necessity. I used to warm them one at a time like Roger does. Then I did the paper towel thing like Sozobe. I finally go this thing and now I can warm them all at once and they stay warm for a long time.

CJane--

I love it--and I'm delighted to know that one could leave the handle and spout exposed. I'm particularly uncoordinated in the morning and being able to pour tea without undressing the teapot would be soothing.

As for my competence--I have some talents, but I also have great, gaping holes in my abilities, starting with knitting and moving on to parallel parking and tidying computers and dinner parties....

All the same, thank you for the kind words.

Tea cozies are gay. I have no idea what a tortilla warmer is, we do the"throw em on the griddle part of the gas stove

Tortilla warmers? Aren't they along the lines of aid and comfort to the enemy?
