I just read through Joe Nations marathon training log (great pictures, I love 'em) and besides being VERY impressed with Joe, it got me wondering...

What do you do to get the blood pumping?

(bear, you don't need to answer, we already know) Laughing

I prefer playing. I get lots of exercise playing tag, riding my kid's scooter, playing monster, etc.

I have no time for "actual" exercise.

If I could afford to be a ski bum, that is what I would prefer.

oooo...this is good

so many other choices I hadn't thought about.

Reading JoeNations thread, although I was impressed, I have to admit I read it with a bit of horror.

All my life, I have done everything in my power to avoid running more than, let's say 10 feet. I'm just not built for it. There's no part of me that doesn't scream in rebellion.

Back in the, what was it? 80's? when everyone took up jogging, I really really tried it, made myself do it for 6 months, and was just as miserable as on day 1.

I'm more of a glider, like soz's elliptical. Now of course, I'm all into my indoor rower.

Skiing? What would you do during the off months?

What off months? That is why God made hemispheres.

I LOVED running when I was in shape.

I liked it a lot when I was slightly out of shape and trying to get back in shape (super efficient).

After all of that running, my knees are fine but give me twinges now and then and I want to keep them fine, so I like the more knee-friendly exercises (like the elliptical).

I don't like to exercise at all, but I always feel better after I've pushed myself to do it. I go to the gym about 5 days/week for weight training (alternating muscle groups each day) and cardio on the treadmill.

Hate it! But accept that it's necessary. Right now, I'm on the elliptical but I used to go out dancing alot and that kept me trim. Also roller skating.

Put me down for "other".

In my case that's canoeing. Unfortunately, I don't get to do it as much as
I'd like. I once worked with some guys who came to work with canoes
racked on the roffs of their cars. We'd head for the Concord River at
lunch, paddle for about a half hour, and then back to work. I miss those
days!

The high point of the year was racing in "The Run of the Charles".

It was also a leg workout as you have to portage around the dams.

My accountant is a major kayaker/canoer and she is going to teach me and my son this year since we live within walking distance of the Neuse river so I'm adding that to my regular regimen and cycling.

Oh wow, that must've been great!

I adore canoeing.

My favorite workout ever was pick-up basketball, when I was really good. I'd be out there for 2-6 hours at a time (yes 6) and was in the best shape of my life. Motivation is always a problem for me when it comes to exercise (happy after I've done it, rarely want to start), but with pick-up it was always "just one more..." If I was on the losing team, I wanted to win before leaving, and if I was on the winning team, well I couldn't leave my teammates in the lurch, could I...?

My absolute favorite thing to do is to have some good music on and clean the hell out of my house.

Every 2 or 3 days I do this and I LOVE it. I guarantee you, I get just as much of a work out as someone who is walking for several miles.. all crammed into a few hours
