I didn't really name my car, much less name it Jud Frye, but it is indeed dead. Gone.

I'm not much into cars. I have a bad history with them. This car served me well and seemed to have broken the curse. I drove it for 13 years. It never gave me any serious problems -- ever.

Until yesterday.

I had to take Mo to the doctor. I started the car and it made a funny noise. Hmmmm?

I pulled into the parking space at the doctor's office, turned the car off and smoke started coming out from under the hood.

Here I am with a sick six year old (sinus infection, on the mend today), in a parking lot a half mile from home with smoke/steam/whatever flowing from my car.

I called Mr. B with an SOS, turned away from the car and didn't look back. Mr. B SOSed our lovely and wonderful neighbor who rescued Mo and I after our appointment, took us to get his prescription filled and joined us for ice cream at the pricey neighborhood ice cream emporium.

Lovely neighbor, who is a mechanic, later went with Mr. B to look at Jud and they pronounced him deahd.

So now I need some kind of car.

I don't drive very often - usually only filling my tank up every couple of weeks - but fuel economy is still important.

I have to haul around stinky pets and messy Mo and sometimes stuff so it needs some cargo area (not for Mo -- he gets to sit in a seat -- but he sometimes travels with his own cargo) but I don't want anything huge.

I don't want something I have to worry and fret over.

I don't want to spend a lot of money and I might consider something used.

I kind of like those Honda Elements.

Are they any good?

Any car where you can take a hose to the interior is my kind of vehicle.

The scion ( is a toyota) and you can get one with cargo space, and less then 18,000 brand new.

and at 18,000 they are kinda spiffy with all the bells and whistles

Those things remind me of little ambulances or something. One of my neighbors has one and for some reason it always gives me the creeps.

The price sounds pretty good though!

You seem to be in a jolly mood this morning, Mr. Setanta!

I feel like putting on a red dress and singing to Jud now.

Of course, that could just be lack of sleep talking.....

Bicycle? Check!

Wheelbarrow? Check!

Blowtorch? Check!

Remembering I live in a mountainy terrain? Priceless.

I'm thinking I'll look doubly tasty after bike-barrowing around for a bit until I find a new car.

Get a used Element. The reviews look good - the prices look all right (I checked them out on AutoTrader a coupla weeks ago) - and they're hosable - which I think is brilliant.

Ugly lil buggers - but you can hose them down.

Did you hear that, people - you can hose them down!

I agree - the ability to hose it down is brilliant. That is exactly why I am considering the Element. I'm all about utility and don't care a whit about style when it comes to cars.

Are you thinking of getting one, eBeth?

I think what they meant is that the back is big enough for a hose down. Maybe even two hos down.

Well that does give me an idea of how I might make a car payment, cjhsa.

I haven't had a car payment in 13 years. This car was bought for me as a company car. Getting used to a car payment isn't going to be easy.

Boomer, the Element's on an extremely short list for me. Two dogs, one Setanta, luggage, occasionally my friend Brenda Lee and her luggage as well - the Civic is straining at the seams.

Two dogs that like mud and/or sand and/or snow means the hosing down option is verra tempting.

Hey!

While gutting Jud I found a bag of jelly beans and a valium!

A buzz thunky good time is on the horizon!

Have you test driven an Element, eBeth? It looks a little top heavy and I wonder how it handles winding roads.

I drove a friend's Element. It handles the windy roads as well as it looks it will...but not terrible, you can still count on Honda.

The Subaru Forrester is a very good car as well...not a bad driving car, reliable, AWD, and can fit a decent amount of cargo.

The new Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4's are good choices also...but I think the RAV has a lot more power, something like 268hp, which is a lot for a small 'ute.

Thank you, Slappy!

My old car was a Subaru and it was very reliable -- until yesterday when it just wasn't anymore. Maybe I ought to take a look at the Forester.

I'm not at all familiar with the other Honda or the Toyota you mention but I'll check them out!
