If you get all your facts from Hollywood blockbusters it's no wonder you talk out of your arse.

Henry V was the first king to use English in court, not French, so he was the first monarch to act like an English ruler instead of a French overlord.

Quote:
As for Shakespeare, he had to bow to his political paymasters who commissioned plays, and as Henry V was their flavour of the month, he got wrote about a lot.

That is such a simplistic response to what was going on in London at the time. Not all plays were commissioned, they were primarily entertainment. Henry V is Shakespeare's attempt to define what makes a good king, not what happens to be 'flavour of the month.'

Quote:
Edward I was born in London

So what. Place of birth is not the only factor in nationality. Boris Johnson was born in New York, (the one in America.)

RIP Rik Mayall. He's the funniest comedian I've ever seen live.

Since it's now required that British schools have to promote 'fundamental British values' in the classroom, I like this definition of "British values" best:
Being wary of foreigners while having a Belgian beer with an Indian curry in your Spanish finca wearing Indonesian clothes

Unfortunately, the Education Secretary doesn't agree with my definition at all:
Michael Gove wrote:
There is something rather unBritish about seeking to define Britishness. Rather like trying to define leadership, it’s a quality which is best appreciated when demonstrated through action rather than described in the abstract.

@Walter Hinteler,

The Brummie muslims don't have a Brummie accent. They are not integrated at all, and they don't want to be, most of them.
Still, this planned reaction will probably make them even more bolshie.
Hearts and minds are not being won over.

@McTag,

Same problem cropping up in Bradford, according to tonight's radio news.

Hey what about the Irish nuns who had children in their care die, then threw them secretly into a pit? 800, maybe more.
The Irish government has decided to open an inquiry, rather late.

@McTag,
You'll certainly have no problems with this Guardian's quiz:

That casts damning light on the 1st Earl of Lancaster and Leicester.

But wait: they had ius soli in those days? I'd thought, it only was used for the first time, when the English colonies in America became independent, and then only in the USA and Canada?

@Walter Hinteler,
Not content with German and English, he speaks Latin too. Is there no end to this man's talents?

And Helga know more about the royal house of Windsor (Battenberg) than anyone else I know.

That's why they win on penalties. They do their homework. Wink

Is my monitor working properly?
I've just googled World Cup 2014 and can't seem to find Scotland, Wales and Ireland in the list of teams!
Yet no-hopers like Ghana, Cameroon and China are in there, what's going on?

@Walter Hinteler,

Good quiz, Walter.

Hey nobody's shown any interest in my Giles Coren article.

Nor the erstwhile childcare activities of Irish nuns.

No it seems my monitor wasn't playing up at all. I've just googled "When did Scotland last qualify for the World Cup?" and see it was 16 years ago in 1998!
They haven't qualified for the 4 World Cups since then, and yet fly-blown third-world countries have!
I suppose the jocks have gone soft nowadays, that figgers because I hear Edinburgh is the gay capital of Europe!
Tut-tut, whatever would William Wallace say?..

PS- maybe Scotland going independent will be a good thing after all, because I'm sure most of us Englishmen don't want to be linked to a nation of cissies who can't play football..Smile
