@McTag,
The thing that was pointed out on the radio yesterday was that The Daily Mail was on the spot taking photos during the arrest, Leveson still has a long way to go.

Not "Okay". Bumping is bad forum etiquette and will get you a bad reputation and irritate other users, as you are discovering. This is not your own personal forum.

"Bad forum etiquette"? Sez who? Bumping to turn the page can be viewed as a service to some, and an irritant to some of the ill-tempered denizens of this thread, apparently, spendi excluded.

@contrex,
Many of us have to bump, sometimes more than once, to see a post on some particular threads that have a page turning bug. The moderators know about this.

@ossobuco,
I overheard them say that as long as it's done in moderation, there's no fine.

Could somebody explain this 'turning the page' thing to me? I don't quite understand. I post in a thread, and when I come back I can look in My Posts to see the thread title and if the latest post is after mine it will be marked in red. Why do any pages need to be 'turned'? [EDIT] This post has appeared at the bottom of page 658, at 5:57 PM local time, and if I come back later I expect there to be more pages. But so what? (I genuinely don't get it)

It is certainly the case on the tech help forums I advise on that if you see a post 9:00 AM from John Doe asking for help with a computer problem, and then at 9:10 and 9:20 you see BUMPs by John Doe just to keep his issue at the top of the 'latest posts' list on the forum home page, you can bet your life that John Doe will get a flaming from other people, including moderators, for selfishly shouting "Me first!" and attempting to keep at the head of the line. Also it leads to clutter and wastes forum space. Maybe it's different here.

I'm torn between "helping" and "mocking someone who is so evil they deserve no aid under any circumstance".

I guess you're lucky I'm one of the good guys.

On some threads (usually the longer ones), when a page is full and the conversation moves to the next page, that next page sometimes will not appear until a few posts have been made on it.

So if there is just one post made on the next page, and that error strikes, the only way to read the post is to either wait for more people to post, or to post yourself until it appears.

That may be the case in those forums, but that's not what's going on here, as vonny tried to explain to you in the post you replied to. The "bumping" is not an attention-seeking device, but rather is done to reveal the first 3 posts at the top of the next page in this thread. Those posts DO NOT appear until the 4th post is made in that new page (I don't believe they even appear with a red "NEW" on "New Posts"). Vonny tried to explain his/her motivation for bumping in the post you replied to, but in your typical snotty fashion, you castigated vonny for "poor etiquette" without knowing all of the facts.

Thank you so much, Ticomaya, you put it far more succinctly than I could have done. I'm new to forums - any type of forum - and it's still all rather confusing to me. My husband and I only began using computers three years ago, and was only January of this year that I first posted on one of the chat/discussion threads. Fortunately, most of the people I've met on A2K have been like you - pretty nice!

Most of the regulars on this thread are nice (sorta), but they can be curmudgeonly at times. Wink

@vonny,
He's a central defender in a soccer (how I hate that word) team in Arizona vonny. Probably something like Norman Hunter only not as sprightly.

They are all a bit the same due to heading the long ball back from where it came so often.
