This topic has been discussed quite a few times during the last decade: (English) translation of foreign geographic names.

So "Wien" is 'Vienna'. But "Wiener Neustadt" is 'Wiener Neustadt' and not 'Vieanna Newtown". Perhaps, because it was founded and built, using the ransom (six thousand bucket, about 23 tons, of silver) Leopold V, Duke of Austria, got from Richard I of England?

@Walter Hinteler,
I thought he got the money from John.

Duke Leopold V of Austria established the town in 1194[2] and financed the construction of a fortress close to the Hungarian border with the ransom paid for the English king Richard the Lionheart, whom he had previously captured and held as a hostage at Dürnstein Castle.

@Walter Hinteler,
That's one of the reasons John is always portrayed as the villain in Robin Hood, always collecting taxes to pay for his brother's ransom. Richard however, still comes across as a hero despite being a complete bastard.

Football is when ... when a German team wins the European cup final in Wembley.

@Walter Hinteler,
Looks like it's going to be an all German affair. Should be a cracking match, it's why football is known as the beautiful game. There's real poetry in an all German final at Wembley, a poetry that's unique to football. Boris Becker winning Wimbledon just can't compare.

I wonder how many tennis players at Flushing Meadows know that the origin of the name is Vlissingen, Netherlands?

And I've no idea how we got Leghorn from Livorno, Italy.
To say nothing of Wipers.

@vonny,
Ieper/Yper - since it's situated in West-Vlaanderen, where the Belgians don't like (and speak) French. Wink

@izzythepush,
The Sun says: "Wembley prepares for the great invasion by our Anglo-Saxon cousins on May 25."

Bayern Munich doesn't offer tickets for non-members, but Borussia Dortmund does: 1.250 out of their 25.000 tickets.
Although I've applied, most certainly I'll accept the offer of a friend, who already got free tickets: for the Wetherspoons near the stadium ... Wink

@margo,
It's The Sun, if it wasn't for xenophobia, gratuitous nudity and an almost religious obsession with WW2 they wouldn't have a readership.

Will Newcastle win today ... and if not, what? Seriously worried!

@vonny,
I'm worried too, Southampton aren't out of the woods yet and we're facing Spurs. Gareth Bale wants to score against his old club.

Just looked at the head to head stats for Newcastle West Ham, they're fairly evenly matched, but there is a home advantage.
