What a day for a daydream for us couchies!!

11a.m start--usual offices of which I am unable to speak as my brain goes dead thinking about them.

A poke around on A2K and then the Merseyside derby which ended midst heated recriminations with Mr Moyes kicking the sponge bucket into the crowd and then being unavailable for his supposed mandatory interview as he was busy "gathering his thoughts." Wonderful stuff. Injustice staring you in the face.

After that the Dewhurst Stakes where we saw next year's favourite for the 2,000 Guineas and Derby, The Champion Stakes, won by a French horse and The Cesarewitch, presumably named for a mighty wench, on which one betting office punter won £1.5 million. (Let's hope it was that customer of Granny smorgsie who said that brain surgery would be acceptable if he couldn't be an airline pilot.)

All the while Rocket Ronnie is coming back from being 5-2 down to win 6-5 in a semi-final packed with great skill and drama and refereed by a severely suited lady in flash bling with a squeaky voice who didn't seem to know what "touching balls" meant and, joy of joy, India stuffing Australia at 20/20 in Mumbai. Those Indian ladies love their cricket. My remote control finger is knackered.

And shortly the rugby where the more points S.Africa win by the more loot will flow into spendi's treasure chest from which it is notoriously difficult to prise it loose.

Then the hot soak for honing up a thirst and the pub for quenching it.

Am I in heaven?

You see folks.

She's ashamed of "granny". And "Nana" just sounds all wrong.

If it was something to do with Zola's Nana I could understand it but that is not proper when grandchildren are around.

Quote:
A year before he started to write Nana, Zola didn't know anything yet about the Variétés. It was Ludovic Halévy who invited him to see an operetta with him on February 15, 1878, took him backstage, and told him innumerable stories about the amorous life of the star (Anna Judic whose ménage à trois would become the model for Rose Mignon, her husband, and Fauchery) and also about famous cocottes such as Blanche d'Antigny, Anna Deslions, Delphine de Lizy, and Hortense Schneider, an amalgam of which was to serve the writer as the basis for his principal character.

if you see what I mean.

Sarah is right not wanting to be Nana, as it is not The dream..

One the other hand, Spendi, if you haven't done so, read L'assommoir.

Well we lost to a better side!

Well done South Africa {Shower of bastards}

Good night last night, we had a boxing tournament; seven contests from our club boxers involved. Two bouts had to be cancelled due to a couple of irregularities. We won all the other five, so it was an excellent night for us in general.

Didn't get home until one o'clock this morning. A few famous professionals were in the building, which made it all the more interesting for the lads and the local newspapers were in attendance. Expecting a good write up in The local Guardian next week.

Had a fifteen mile cycle ride this afternoon to blow the cob-webs away.

You have it wrong Francis.

She wants to be Nana and not granny. Granny is not as wrinkle free as Nana if you have a religious belief in the magical power of words but it does sound a bit soft. Nan-nan is another one they use. Gets right up my nose that stuff. It like having to have your socks pulled up and your ears washed all the time.

Anyway smorgsie calls me all sorts of derogatory names and I never complain. A granny's a granny when all said and done.

Yes Mathos- very good- we are all proud of you I'm sure. I am at least. It's a privilege to be on a thread you call in at from time to time to keep us in touch with your activities which are so worthy of applause. You should get an MBE I think.

My activities are a source of shame to me and by confessing them as I do I'm seeking guidance on how to live a life our new Prime Minister can be proud of like you do.

But what about the "irregularities". After all, we are all interested in "irregularities". Media is full of it. Tell us about those and don't go polishing it up too much.

Felt a bit sorry for Gordon Brown last night (if such a thing is possible)

He travelled all the way to Paris, his team got beat and when they lined up at the end to shake hands, few if any of the English team as much as looked at him! And he was a rugby player, too.

Bit of a bummer, kudos-wise.

Oh for eff's sake!

I'm a Nana because I am from Liverpudlian/Irish. I had a Nana, my daughter has a Nana, all the woman I know are Nana's. It's a working class term, nothing whatsoever to do with Gran being perceived as more ageing than Nan, It hadn't occurred to me it was, till spends made a point of telling me. Her other Gran is a Nana too, and she is from Finland, and older than me, so where's the correlation?

As for calling you derogatory names...

You KNOW they are terms of endearment - you greasy-haired bastard.

However, if they offend, I will cease, you only have to say.

I like it when Smorgs is stern with Spendy.

(And I suspect he likes it too, but in a different and not very healthy way)

In Glasgow, it's "granny"

As in

Oh ye canny push yur granny aff a bus
Oh ye canny push yur granny aff a bus
Oh ye canny push yur granny
Fur she's yur mammy's mammy,
Ye canny push yer granny aff a bus.

Not at all. You may call me anything you wish. It grants me permission to do the same.

Perhaps Mac, so that I can be helped to reform myself, you might explain what a healthy approach would be. I don't think you should keep these important secrets to yourself when you could be spreading enlightenment around. Such reserve is known to have what the trick-cyclists call "costive character".

In general I think ladies should be a lot sterner with men than they are. All this grovelling and obsequiousness is most unbecoming in creatures which combine the most desirable characteristics of body and mind.

I think those men who take advantage of economic superiority, which is rigged anyway, are a bit suspect to say the least, and it leaves them bereft of ideas in the company of rich ladies.

I steer clear of the whole business myself on comfort grounds.

I'm not even sure why you are arguing with the guy smorgs. If you wanna be a Nana, who gives a shite if he prefers a Granny?

Heard on Radio 2 yesterday...and often heard elsewhere...."Live on stage!"

Is there a more inane phrase in the English language?

It could be adapted, though, for events such as Boris Yeltsin and the Queen Mum recently had.

There you go boys! That's an argument eh?

I give a shite and so do a lot of other people. The French even give a gender to words officially. There is a feminising effect of "Nana" and "Nan-nan" which came in during the 70s under PC regulations.

There's something more robust about Grandma and Granny. Like there is with "ruck", "maul" and "scrum".

It is my contention that terms like "Nana" and "Nan-nan", in continual use all through the formative years is feminising. Bringing up sissies.

Explain why the change took place. Granny and Grandma had been in use for donkey's years. The onus is on the revisionists to explain why they adopted these new-fangled terms. Pretending it's natural is pathetic. It is a part of that whole bag of tricks designed to downplay the idea of a male as head of the household.

Very few of those who have adopted them like masculine sports.

DP will have you in frocks lads if you don't watch out.

With one sweet, easy and cheap jibe. Surround yourself with self-complacent babyish words and you will have babyish ideas and, what is much worse, expect everybody else to have.

Actually its not the end of it. Hamiltons car was obviously sabotaged.

Quote:
Mark Cueto has reflected on the moment England's dream of making World Cup history drifted into oblivion, claiming: "It was 100% a try."

And the Sale Sharks wing's sense of disbelief was only deepened by texters who bombarded his mobile phone while England fought tooth and nail to successfully defend their world title.

Cueto said: "There were about 30 text messages on my phone. I think 29 out of the 30 had 'robbed' in the text."

Had Cueto's 43rd minute 'try' been allowed, then England might well have gone on to complete mission improbable and retain the Webb Ellis Trophy

and the Israelis will allow Russia to win so excluding England from the Euro 2008 finals. (Because of the UK boycott of Israeli academics). But you know I dont really give a damn.

Spendy, you're onto something there, but I think you've taken it too far.

In families everywhere, it's common to allow babies and toddlers to use words like mama, papa, nana and so on....for the obvious reason that they can't properly pronounce the alternatives, at first.

It's when adults start to use them back that the trouble starts. Why should an adult talk of "horsie" and "doggy" when speaking to a child? But they do.

Which probably arrests the child's development. (I know that is a horse. Why is that dolt calling it a horsie? Am I being patronised here, or what?)
