RainSoft Filter

Reply Sun 4 Mar, 2007 11:25 am
I bought a RainSoft Silver Series filter/water softener approx 4 to 5 years ago. I want to change the coconut carbon but I can not find no service info on the RainSoft filter. How does the filter come apart? Does the top just screw off? How do you clean it? How much coconut carbon does the unit hold?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Drunk

Thanks.

This is not a simple DIY job. Yes it can be done, but you must follow a multi-step procedure.
What part of the country do you live in?

Do you have a independent water treatment dealer in your area?
This would be the best way to get the job done right the first time, just
make sure you watch and learn so that you can DIY next time if you wish.

I had an independent water treatment dealer out about a year ago to replace the timer on the water softener. Since I could not find anybody that sold the timer, I had no choice in calling the dealer.

I think it sucks that a company like Rain Soft does not make parts or maintenance manuals available to their customers. I think it's safe to say not everyone is capable of replacing their filter media but some are.

I've been an electro-mechanical for over 30 years and worked on a wide range of equipment. I've also rebuilt the V8 in my van. I think I should be able to change the media in a water filter.

Oh yea, the water treatment dealer said that he rebuilds the filters in his shop and exchanges yours with another one. I didn't like that idea because I want the unit I bought, not somebody else's.

To be fair to RS... They like many others have an exclusive territory or franchised dealer network. So they protect each from the other.

Anyone with the desire and ability to use common hand tools can do it with the proper instructions. I and other internet dealers sell the materials and some provide the instructions; I do. You'll pay much less for the materials from an internet dealer than a local dealer and the local dealer may not be all that willing to tell you how to DIY.

That's fine until a customer buys a product from a dealer. The parts should not be proprietary and should be available to the customer.

Let's use an automotive analogy. You buy a car from a dealer, any part for that car is available to purchase from a dealer or the manufacturer. Well, I feel the same should hold true for any product.

Coconut or any other type of carbon is not proprietary to RS. How to take a filter or softener apart isn't either. The control valve and possibly the tank is propreitary to RS. RS has a dealer network and they and most other dealer type companies protect their dealers the same as many other manufacturers of other products do. Many parts of your car are proprietary to the manufacturer and you can only buy them from the dealer. And your vehicle didn't come with manuals showing you how to rebuild the engine or transmission etc.. You usually buy the instructions from soneone else.

So you want to work on your water treatment equipment, then all you have to do is find an an independent dealer to buy the parts/materials from that gives you the instructions to do the job yourself. H2Oman has offered and I do it every day; I sell only to DIYers as all internet dealers do. So instead of wanting things to be different than they are, which isn't going to happen anytime soon or until the guv'mint outlaws the free market concept of our society, work with what is.

@Gary Slusser,
Hello Gary, I too would like to do a maintenance on my RS units I purchased in 2006. Could you sell me the parts and help with the instructions?
