au,

Get off yours first. The day you stop being a police for unAmerican activities is the day I'll stop ragging you about it.

Everybody needs a place to live.We live in America,we call ourselves Americans. It is the last great nation to form in the history of man.It is the distillation of everything that came before, it's vibrancy and polysemic culture comes from this elixir. The old countries are mired in outdated traditions.America reinvents itself everyday. It is the essence of America. But since we have no true national identity the loose bonds that hold us together can easily unravel.Just think what would have happened if the Civil War had ended with the South a separate country. For one thing they most likely would have aligned themselves with Hilter's allure of great riches. My point is,if you want a great America then you must contribute to it's wellbeing.

The USA is great, because it has always been able to overcome it faults. Now that we are at the time of our greatest fault,

May we overcome!

Mabon. You are dead wrong about the South should they have won the Civil War. Aligned themselves with Hitler? Where in the hell did you ever get that idea?

And what is so great about America? The people. That's what is great about America.

Craven, thank you for your wise words in reply to my posting. I certainly appreciate where you are coming from. Smaller countries may not have as strong an influence overseas regarding culture as the US does. Cultural export, whether deliberate or as a by-product needs financing and marketing, resources we may not have as much of as we would like. However, we are making cultural exchange inroads in the US at the moment with our Weapon of Mass Destruction - Steve Irwin the Croc Hunter!!
Our exports are often tied into what we have to import to gain a market. This includes a recent situation where American interests lobbied for more American television air time here if we wanted to purchase a particular popular programme. A small example, I know, but it shows that not all imports are in our immediate control and need negotiation.
With regards to the US being in the spotlight, it is hard to see what is outside the spotlight when the light is in your eyes unless you deliberately turn your head away from the light. Then you may get the chance to see what lies in your shadow. Smile
I wonder if there is little interest in where America has come from because of the desperate conditions immigrants had left and that their focus had to be on creating their future rather than rueing the past. America still seems to have that 'look to the future' focus. Certainly a fascinating nation to watch. Smile

what is so great about America?
We have more freedoms, we have a Constitution, we have a stable political system. Sure, we are not flawless but in the short time we have been a nation, we have won more fights and shown the world that this new kid will not be underestimated.

and, we have the best porn and junk food Laughing j/k

Whats so great about America?

Its hardcore optimism its glocalised cityscapes its neon lights and highways and the naive dreams they inspire its beliefs in everyone's ability to always start again its pragmatism its unequalled ability to generate wealth however unequally distributed its robust individualism its indiscriminate friendliness ("have a nice day!") its brilliance in initiating ever new ways to make life convenient its mountains and plains and endless unpretentious small towns its relative lack of hangups about immigration (compared to Europe) its vibrant and ever transforming popular culture and the way it succeeds in infiltrating teenage dreams around the world its POP music and its black culture hip-hop funk soul rhythm'n'blues rock'n'roll jazz swing blues its insouciance its pluriformity and the way it includes people as diverse of kind, style, expression and identity as europe but handily united in one language, one label, its erstwhile great railway system its writers its myths of adventure beats hoboes guitars slung over the shoulder and let me emphasize again its way of instilling these evocative popular culture iconic images that everyone around the world has come to identify with "america" even if they dont actually exist as such (anymore) in daily practice its democratic language with its "you" that knows no difference between professor or cleaner its 24/7s its classic movies its slang its gangstas its new york its bagels and muffins and brownies and lattes its no-nonsense determination and almost exasperating capability for cheerfulness ...

all that for example and i think i've come full circle now.

America Superiority Poll
America and her people are really fortunate compare to other people in the world. Nonetheless, America is not where she is today without ingenuity and hardwork. I believe that luck has very little to do with her success as leader of the world today and for many years to come.

Thank you for your post, nimh, I can relate to that.

Kennedy said "Ich bin ein Berliner" and in the sense that we're all in this together, in the global village, ich bin ein yankee, and pleased to be.

My only comment is that it is pleasant to see a comment that praises America rather than one tearing it down Thank you Nimh.

if you go into the politics forum, you'll see a few dunces who hate America (pistoff and Titus).

I bet pistoff and Titus don't hate America.

What pisses me off, is people who opine that to be against GWB and all his questionable works, is to be somehow anti-American.

When folk realise that precisely the opposite is true, we'll start to make some progress.

No Names however there are some who have turned their dislike for Bush and his administration, which I can understand, into hatred for America which I cannot. America is still the land of opportunity and remains the haven for the downtrodden that despite all it's warts.

I agree but those I mention truly hate America, not just Bush. It is evident in their posts.
