....

Over 300 schools are closed today in the area because of the weather.

Really??? Never considered that. It's 1 and feels like -14 here... better check to see if there are any school closings.

I'd guess it has to do with not wanting kids standing outside waiting for the bus.

I remember ice skating at -7; don't think our grade school back in Chicago-adjacent ever closed for weather. On the other hand, maybe they should have...

Currently 30 degrees F here in God's country and believe it or not that's pretty damned cold for around here... this winter anyway. It was 51 yesterday.

I grew up right off Lake Erie and I despise the cold....

What the-? I wrote something to sozobe and when I hit the submit button the ad from the top of the page was in the box and my script was where the ad should have been.

Now there is a different ad on top and my script seems to have vanished into the Sea of Electrons.

Very bizzare.

When did I say woo-hoo?

(Not for this -- what use is a snow day if there isn't even any snow? Hmph.)

11:00 AM CST, sparkling bright and sunny, clear blue sky, -24°F, wind has dropped off to about 3-5MPH, so windchill is a moderate -30°F (-31°C/ -35°C) - overnight low was -31°F. Public schools here are open, as are most private schools. No county offices closed. Was in town this morning, business as usual, gas station was pretty busy, same-old crowd (and it is a pretty old crowd) at the cafe for customary coffee and convo - the cold was the main topic of convo, though ("Yeah, but when I was a kid, it was so cold that ... "). The big window to the street was totally frosted over.

The Ponies haven't been out of their barn more than a few minutes at a time the past couple days - I almost wish the damned thing was closer to the house; they're going through an awful lotta feed, and there's no autofill for the feed trough, so I gotta make the trip a couple times a day. Their water trough is heated, of course, and does autofill - there's a coating of rhime ice up the wall behind it (really should double-wall that and insulate it, I s'pose), and there are little icicles hanging from the rafters above it. As for The Puppies, the yellow snow is getting closer to the house.

And now we're really getting the snow, which in pretty much any other circumstances would be fabulous but if school is canceled TOMORROW too because of the snow I just may spontaneously combust. (Planned on having four hours yesterday plus six hours today -- school plus afterschool activities -- to get work done, and all of that has gone poof, and I NEEDED it.)

At least if it's a snowday tomorrow we can go play in the snow.

Temperatures here are in single digits on the friendly side of zero (F). I've been out an about grocery shopping and keeping a medical appointment.

In an informal survey, nine out of ten women feel that the current bitter cold is harder on them than it is on less sensitive people.

I'm in the majority here.

Since I haven't NEEDED to go outside, I've rather liked the cold. (Except for the infernal dryness - slathering on lotion, trying to remember to drink more than usual.)

I'm sympathetic to those who need to.

I still don't want a snow day tomorrow but I do have to admit that this is one of my favorite sights. Endless blanket of snow, with that wonderful sparkling effect going on that happens when its cold enough for snowflakes to stay intact and lightly nestle on their neighbors instead of melting. And more snow coming down and sparkling on the way. May have to bundle up (way up) and take an after-dark stroll.
