Predicting a wind chill of - 18 C. today (- 6 F. ?)

Note to self: don't slip on crocs for a quick jaunt to the garden shed!

Crocs = multiple holes = poor choice of winter footwear...

Whoa, timber.

We have an advisory too, not quite that severe though:

Quote:
A WIND CHILL ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM EST TUESDAY.

SINGLE DIGIT TEMPERATURES WILL COMBINE WITH WINDS OF 10 TO 20 MPH
TO PRODUCE DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILLS. WIND CHILL READINGS OF
10 TO 20 BELOW ZERO ARE EXPECTED THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING.

A WIND CHILL ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN A STRONG WIND WILL COMBINE
WITH COLD TEMPERATURES TO CREATE DANGEROUSLY COLD CONDITIONS FOR
EXPOSED SKIN. THE WIND WILL MAKE IT FEEL LIKE IT IS BETWEEN
10 AND 20 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. THOSE PLANNING TO VENTURE OUTDOORS
SHOULD USE COMMON SENSE AND DRESS WARMLY...MAKING SURE THAT ALL
EXPOSED SKIN IS COVERED.

It makes sense though doesn't it? Most severe cold of the year on one side of the globe, most severe heat on the other side. Then things will slowly start switching around...

Dadpad, is that you actually frying an egg? (If so, did you eat it?)

Minus 4c overnight, but a beautiful sunny day with a high of about 8c.

Bird flu outbreak in Suffolk ( here ) and so I'm a bit confused as to whether we're allowed to go near wild birds at the mo.
Therefore, in an attempt to feed the birds yet remain safe, I've decided not to hang the food up from the tree as usual, and am now lobbing the peanuts from a great distance.

Took my four mile walk today. I was wearing my French knit pants, and my fuzzy little jacket. What a pleasure not to come home dripping with sweat! Very Happy

It ain't gettin' any warmer - currently, 14:15 CST, -11°F/Windchill -35°F (-24°C/-37°C). The actual air temperature is dropping; its fallen 2° in the past hour. Wind (out of the North-Northwest) is picking up, too - its gone from around 8/10MPH to around 12/15MPH, and no cloud cover, so as evening comes into effect, we can expect temperatures to drop significantly. Temperatures - actual air temperatures - a couple hundred miles Northwest of here, where that wind is coming from, are in the -Teens/-20s and dropping. Oh, boy.

I just can not comprehend those cold tempartures, I mean once it gets padt about -6 surely it doesnt matter any more? I think -6 the coldest temp I have ever experienced. I had to pee on the car windscreen to get the frost off.
How does the world function at -20C what do people do? like builders and other outside workers?

We're pretty lucky in the UK as far as extreme cold is concerned, DP, as we simply don't get any.

Damp or wet, we can do that....and very hot, we can do that sometimes as well. Coldest it gets here though is about minus 10c, and even that's pretty rare.

September and October are the busiest months for the local hospitals' Obstetretics units Laughing

When it gets below about -10°F most recreational outdoor activity comes to a halt, along with logging and outside construction. For those who hafta go out, you just dress for it; multiple layers (starting out with thermal longies for underwear) and a sturdy, water-repellent, wind-proof outer shell, along with a full-face wool balaclava (generally opening only for the eyes, which are protected at least by glasses, if not ski-type goggles), heavy mittens (sometimes worn over gloves), thick, insulated socks and "footpack" type heavilly insulated bots are the norm.

A joke of some currency hereabouts:

Q: What's the difference between New Jersey and Wisconsin?

A: In new Jersey, if somebody comes into an all-night gas station at 3:00 AM wearing a full-face woolen mask, the attendant shrieks "Don't hurt me! Don't hurt me! Take whatever you want! Here's the cash!!!" ... in Wisconsin, the attendant, without taking the phone from her shoulder, offhandedly inquires "What pump are you on?"

Heh!

Yeah, seeing a lot of those masks.

When I was a kid in Minnesota and there was snow on the ground (and there always was, it seems), we'd just bundle up in those temps and go play. (I remember being annoyed that the snow wasn't any good for making anything -- it wouldn't stick together.) Lots of ice skating.

Not much snow on the ground right now. I could totally make an ice skating rink in my backyard if I wanted to though. (Hmmmmmmmmm...!)

We're largely being wimpy though. Staying inside, playing board games, playing non-board games (20 questions), making stuff, etc. (Sozlet is SO ready to go to school tomorrow...)

Tuesday the 6th February has been declared a day of Total Fire Ban for the North Eastern Total Fire Ban district. CFA advises people living in areas at risk of fire to activate their bush fire plan.

I'm thinking we should build a bloody great insulated tube and pipe some heat your way Timber. We wouldnt even need fans cause heat rises.

I appreciate the warm thoughts, dadpad - but don't worry; we're used to it, and besides, it never lasts more than a few weeks, a month or so at most, mosta the time anyhow. In fact, they're saying this cold snap - only a few days more than a week old at present - should start moderating by the end of the coming week, with daytime high temperatures possibly approaching freezing and nighttime lows holding above Zero by around Valentine's Day.

It was quite cold and windy last night. This AM was 5 F and no wind. I took the dogs out ofr a run and they were crunching the snow as they ran around. Its amazing how you can hear their crunching sounds at hundreds of feet away.

Some 8 or more deer were in the pasture along with the sheep. . Have to find out about any reported CWD in Pa's deer herds.

It's -1 but feels like -18 here.

I love Michigan.

It makes me so sad thinking about all the people without homes.... Crying or Very sad And on top of that....all the animals that will freeze to death too because someone has locked them outside and chained them to a fence and they can't even try to seek shelter. Crying or Very sad

Over 300 schools are closed today in the area because of the weather.

I was sitting at an intersection last night, a steaming cup of coffee in my hand and heater cranked up full blast in my truck, when I noticed a homeless guy standing on the corner. The temperature was about 10 below and the wind chills were the kind of stuff that will kill you in minutes.

I opened my window and threw my coffee on the guy. That got him jumping around pretty good and I'm sure the hot fluid against his skin felt pretty damn good, all things considered.

I drove away from the intersection with a smile on my face. I enjoy helping my fellow man.
