Philly- Tell Me About It!!!!

Reply Wed 31 Jan, 2007 09:59 am
Ok- so my roommate is interviewing next week for a job in Philly- but she has only been there once and knows nothing about it, or if she'd want to live there. I got great feedback in here before about traveling, so I told her I'd ask around.

What's it like in Philly, what are some good areas to live in, what is the cost of living like, do you need a car to get around, or do they have a subway, what are the people/culture like?

Thanks!!!

I only go every year or so to the flower show, but I LOVE The Reading Terminal Market:

Reading Market

Overall, I think it's a nice city. It's not as overwhelming as Manhattan or Boston, but has many of the positives - art, restaurants, history, theatre, a diveristy of people and neighborhoods, good public transportation etc.
If I had to move back to a city I would consider it.

Lived in a Philly suburb from '68 - '72 (I was a kid then), also went to Law School in Delaware from '83 - '86 so I visited Philly a lot. Don't have a lot of time to reply right now but it's mostly a lovely city, very intimate and walkable. This is their official site: http://www.phila.gov/

Places to go
Kennett Square (for the mushrooms)
Longwood Gardens
Winterthur if you feel like travelling to Delaware

The oldest streets are the ones named after trees, Chestnut St., etc. Leave your car and walk around 'em.

I'll try to come back when I have more time to go into detail.

Thanks for the info guys! Anyone have any thoughts on the cost of living? Like what a 1 bedroom goes for in a safe area?

Is it possible to get around without a car?

I know that the very inner city is walkable, but that might be expensive in safe areas. There's also SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority) and you can even take Amtrak to Wilmington, DE.

BTW, I haven't seen you before. Welcome to A2K, strawberry333!

Thanks for the welcome Jespah- I've only been on for about a week or two, so I'm a total newbie! I've been poking around a lot and there seems to be a lot of cool people and things going on here Smile

We like to think so. Smile Ach, Philly, it's been a while since I was even there. We left when I was 9 and then I was in nearby D'ware when I was in Law School but that was, oof, over 20 years ago. I think the last time I was in the area for a vacation-type thing was over 10 years ago, too.

Oddly enough, I think it's one of the few US areas where we don't seem to have anyone who's really active on A2K. A poster named Frank Apisa is in NJ but I believe he's closer to NY than PA. Also there's at least one in the Poconos area that I know of.

But we don't seem to have Philadelphians here. Such are the weirdnesses of the Internet. Perhaps they're all out getting cheese steaks.
