WE ARE ALL (UK) HUNKERING DOWN AT THE MOMENT - DIABOLICAL!

Think of us all here in the UK at the mo, as we batten down the hatches!

It's not quite as strong as the hurricane we had back in '87, but the entire UK is being blown to smithereens right now, and it's just going on, and on, and on......

70mph "gusts" the BBC calls it...more like bloody constant!

I was just out in the garden, trying to pull a very large tub back upright, when there was an almighty ripping sound nearby, that went on for about ten seconds or so.
Frightened the bloody life out of me (brave under fire, us Brits). I reckon that either someone's roof has come off, or a very large tree is down in the park.

STOP PRESS.....there was an almighty bang just outside a second ago....I dread to look.

I'll post some pics if it's safe enough to get out there and have a mooch around.

For now...here's Auntie Beeb with the latest.

Some of the concrete pointing has fallen down off the side chimney and made a hole in the garage roof! Bugger!

The greenhouse looks like it's lost a couple of panes, so far, and the garden furniture is now shared equally between the adjoining three or four neighbours' gardens.

I seem to have acquired a black plastic dustbin from somewhere though, so it isn't ALL bad.

I wish you were, Gus...I'm in need of the sort of comfort that only you can provide.

You won't believe it: we have/get "Kyrill" here in Europe as well (only 90 km/h - 7 bft here in Lippstadt so far, though).

The main storm is predicted to come after 15:00 GMT

And the damn Aussies are having nice 100 degree temperatures right now, accompanied by light, skin-caressing breezes.

One of the comments from Brits, sent in to the Beeb website.......

"Yes my Telegraph (newspaper) was late this morning and when it arrived it was wet...."

72 degrees here and perfectly calm -- not a trace of wind.

I'll go outside later on and see what it's like there.

The cat has been woken up!

Things are therefore looking serious!

Lord, perhaps this is not the time or place, but I would seriously consider purchasing that black plastic dustbin from you once the storm has passed.

Have you considered a price yet?

Strange bedfellows, L.E.

BOSTON - Some leading scientists and evangelical Christian leaders have agreed to put aside their fierce differences over the origin of life and work together to fight global warming.
Representatives met recently in Georgia and agreed on the need for urgent action. Details on the talks will be disclosed in Washington on Wednesday.
"Whether God created the Earth in a millisecond or whether it evolved over billions of years, the issue we agree on is that it needs to be cared for today," said Rich Cizik, vice president of government relations for the National Association of Evangelicals, which represents 45,000 churches.

Nobody blamed global warming back in 1588 though, Letty.

It scuppered the Armada, and everyone cheered!

Where is a good Armada nowadays, when you want one?

Perhaps one of the neighbors opened a can.

Sorry to hear about the damage.

Ice is melting off of the roof here, and making a racket as it slides off.

The evangelicals would say it was an act of God, now everyone is getting on the same page.

My office is on the 30th floor. Since morning, the window panes (which flex in high winds) are creaking constantly. So disconcerting !
