@FBM,
I was thinking of the coots that used to play in the Venice (california) canals..
I've got photos somewhere. The moorhens reminded me of them.

I used the word cootie, as a made up adjective - that's my way, toy with words - referencing from my childhood word cootie and the word cutie, but I don't really know the meaning of that word, cootie. I think "he's got cooties" was something like "that boy has lice", but I don't know that for sure.

@ossobuco,

an aquatic bird of the rail family, with blackish plumage, lobed feet, and a bill that extends back onto the forehead as a horny shield.

That's a dictionary definition of coot (American English) - I'm no bird expert, but I believe a rail is a moorhen. Elsewhere on the internet, the young of the moorhen are referred to as 'cooties'.

I'll be damned. I googled it and "cooties" are in fact a term used for lice. I remember as kids we used to make cootie-catchers, open it one way and you don't see anything, open it the other way and you see all these little black dots you'd drawn in. The dots must have been supposed to represent lice, but being kids of the pesticide age, we had no idea what lice were. thanks, osso, for resolving a decades-old conundrum.

maybe this is a failing in my part, I consider the animal of interest, but I can't think it's beautiful.

@vonny,
There were lots of interesting animals on properties in my old area in northern california. Ferndale (cows), Arcata (cows), lots of nearby towns where people with land kept alpacas, goats, and other animals I'm not remembering visually. On a field in the town of Orick, a passel (what would be the word?) of many Roosevelt elk. Plus of course there were deer and bears.

@edgarblythe,
That reminds me of a photo Francis posted here, I think on this thread, of
such a meeting at the edge of his koi pond. (I long miss Francis badly.)

@edgarblythe,
But I'm not. I might have signed up years ago to see Walter's photos (or were they Dasha's) but I'm freaked by the possible destruction to my sanity if I joined. My answering an old pal/colleague on a Linkedin invite turned int0 a horribleoma. Apparently I'm still out there begging all these people, several dozen, apparently from my yahoo contacts list, to check me out. Gaaaaaaaaaaaah. <slaps self>

I still mean to contact all those people and say I'm sorry for the barrage.

Yep. When I post the original size image from Photobucket, it gets displayed with the right-hand side cropped. If I shrink the image in Photobucket first, I get the whole image, albeit smaller.

@FBM,
In Photobucket crop first then resize to 900/640.That suits most boards and e-mail peeps.
