osso, I encountered those amazing shrimp in a rerun of Blue Planet, Seas of Life. Two of them were putting great effort into turning a starfish onto its back so that they could move it to where they could eat it at their leisure. A starfish, btw, that bore some resemblance to Rosborne's most recent photo.

Thanks, Rosborne.

Absolutely staggering, mesquite. Thanks mucho for the photos. I did a bit of poking around. The anemone shrimp is also called the glass anemone. Can't imagine why.

Crested gecko (yes, they can lick their own eyes; comes in handy when you don't have eyelids):

They're not always the color shown. This guy was a bit peeved. Sometimes they're almost all red. Sometimes, less showy.

Wow, great pics, mesquite. At first glance I wasn't sure that the rock beauty was a fish. Figured it out. Yup, a fish. The hamlets are delicate and beautiful. They seem unfazed that they're having their picture taken during a private moment.

Roberta, yeah, the thumbnail picture of the Rock Beauty looked like a Cockatoo.

Crown of Thorns Starfish.

This starfish has very sharp spines packing a painful venom. It feeds on coral leaving behind nothing but the white calcium carbonate skeleton. When I was on Guam in the late sixties, there was a huge population bloom of these starfish which caused considerable reef damage.

One of it's few natural predators is the Triton's Trumpet.

Wonderful shots, mesquite. I'm aware that the crown of thorns has been a concern with respect to the Great Barrier Reef. Marine biologists get noivous that the starfish will devour the reef. This apparently comes in waves (no pun intended).

I didn't know about the triton's trumpet being a natural enemy of the crown of thorns.

Something is always eating something.

I'm being self-indulgent tonight Smile

Don't know if I'll get a chance to post later. I won't be around for a while. Not sure how long.

More self-indulgence.
