Well, I'm gobsmacked. Had no idea they were in England too, I guess after all Canada IS part of the British Commonwealth, so that must make them citizens. Those fellers really get around.

Here's the trailer for "Fly Away Home" Good trailer. It would have made me run out and get the DVD except I already have it. Good Canada Geese (oh, all right, BillW, or Canadian Geese) shots in the trailer, more in the film. Definitely a feel-gooder.

Loved it! Must go out and get that film on dvd again - can never see it too often. One of the nicest feel-good films I've ever seen.

@MontereyJack,
MJ (cool initials) - it is preference, I will not take it away from you either. It is named after a man named Canada after all. Without you I would not have known this. Afterall. I do used the term "ya'all", even if you are the only person standing there Razz

@BillW,
And without both of you, I'd still be calling them goosey things! Live and learn Laughing Rolling Eyes

I lived for too short a time in a wonderful area, called by us, northcoast, up near the Oregon border in California. My design and gallery partner and I had projects near and sometimes far, and that's how I got to know Hookton Road. She wanted me to see the alpacas. I've posted photos of them on this thread before, will see if I can find them again. Anyway, it turned out my dermatologist was the one raising those alpacas..

Any time we drove fairly far south, we stopped on the way back to see the alpacas, not far off of highway 101. A kind of decompression, so great.

And right nearby, was a Humboldt County wildlife sanctuary. I've got photos, have been meaning to make paintings, oh, never mind.

Here's the place: the alpaca abode was/is right near Hookton Slough:

Read up - you'll learn about Aleutian Cackling Geese (you could hear them from the road..)
That was fairly close to Loleta and College of the Redwoods.

@ossobuco,

Perhaps one of the most stunning events happens repeatedly in February and March, when once endangered Aleutian cackling geese descend in the thousands and even tens of thousands. The morning fly off has become a draw to the refuge as flock after flock after flock careen toward grassy fields.

Sounds wonderful!

I'm kinda surprised Roberta isn't familiar with them in NYC--I'd think there'd be a few enterprising flocks of them there by now.

I'm plenty familiar with Canada geese. I used to see them in the Bronx. I didn't recognize da bird from just a picture of its head. So shoot me. Or maybe I'll go stand in a corner for a while.

Loved the movie.

Back from the corner.

I've heard of white swans and black swans. I just stumbled across black-necked swans. New to me.

@Barry The Mod,
Barry, Roberta has asked that this thread not be made political. And let me be the first one to admit that I haven't always followed that dictum.

But these posts of yours are every bit as political, they are, in short, propaganda. Why try to make the illegal invasion of Afghanistan, a war crime, become a ooh, aah affair celebrating the war criminals?

I agree fully with you Barry and through you - Roberta. Thank you for your informative contributions. They are, in my belief,, within Roberta's rules of engagement.

JTT is also on my ignore list!

@Barry The Mod,
Just replied to Barry the Mod's PM.

If that the respect you want to show, then so be it, Barry. Why would a big military guy like you take such a cowardly stance?

I forgot to add, "Have a nice day".

Bill can argue with BillRM or Hawkeye 'til he's blue in the face. Faced with the questions I posed to him, he was gone in a flash. There sure is an awful lot of that goin' around and for some strange reason, it's virtually always Americans or guys who have never been able to advance beyond the age of seventeen.

JTT, just stop. Don't whine that someone else does it. That's 4-year-old stuff. Just stop.

Those mandarin ducks are really amazing, make mallards look dowdy and last-year's fashions.

Does anyone know the BBC codes to use to post videos not on youtube? I imagine there must be such codes. This is a link to a non-youtube (as far as I can tell) one, a woman nuzzles a baby goat and ends up with tenty of them nuzzling her back

okay, I thought maybe [youtube] was in fact a sort of generic BBC code indicating the URL was a video. Apparently it's not, it's youtube-specific.
