Barry, Love dem mutts. Of course, you knew that. Glad to see that at least one of the canines got to come home with its human. Thanks for the heartwarming pics. Sigh.

Portuguese man of war. I saw many of these washed up on the beaches when I visited Florida.

Great face, Barry. And a very furry paw. Thanks.

Do auto insurance people get this a lot?

Tibetan mastiffs are very big dogs. Three puppies--before they're very big:

@Roberta,

This photo, called "The Explosion!," was announced Monday as the winner of the 2012 National Geographic Photography Contest.

Photographer: Ashley Vincent
Location: Chonburi, Thailand

Says Vincent: "The subject's name is Busaba, a well-cared-for Indochinese Tigress whose home is at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Thailand. I had taken many portraits of Busaba previously, and it was becoming more and more difficult to come up with an image that appeared any different to the others. Which is why I took to observing her more carefully during my visits, in the hope of capturing something of a behavioural shot."

"The opportunity finally presented itself while watching Busaba enjoying her private pool, then shaking herself dry. In all humility, I have to say that Mother Nature smiled favourably on me that day!"

Oh, she'd fly through the air with a great Bernese: Whitney Welch and Cinder hover above snow-covered Loughlin Avenue Park in Cos Cob, Conn.

A male mandarin duck in breeding plumage

The Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata), or just Mandarin, is a medium-sized, East Asian perching duck, closely related to the North American Wood Duck. It is 41–49 cm long with a 65–75 cm wingspan.

The adult male is a striking and unmistakable bird. It has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers". The breast is purple with two vertical white bars, and the flanks ruddy, with two orange "sails" at the back. The female is similar to female Wood Duck, with a white eye-ring and stripe running back from the eye, but is paler below, has a small white flank stripe, and a pale tip to its bill

The Mandarin ducklings are almost identical in look to Wood ducklings, and appear very similar to Mallard ducklings. The ducklings can be distinguished from Mallard ducklings because the eye-stripe of Mandarin ducklings (and Wood ducklings) stops at the eye, while in Mallard ducklings it reaches all the way to the bill.
