Marjah, Afganistan - A small puppy wondered up to Marines from Alpha Company, 1st Bn, 6th Marines. After following the Marines numerous miles, a soft hearted Marine picked the puppy up and carried the puppy in his drop pouch.

@Barry The Mod,
Snood, I've seen many photos of these guys. I didn't know they were so endangered. Thanks for the pic and the info.

Well, not you've done it, Barry. I want Santo. I want that dog. Sigh. The puppy is beyond cute. I hope it gets through the war safely--along with the humans around it.

@ossobuco,
osso, Dat feline is gawgeous--and hungry looking. Throw the PC a piece of meat. The whiteness of that seagull appeals to me greatly. Snow white. Hey, mister. There's a boid on your head. Thanks for both pics. Vunderbar.

Will today be the day this thread hits 700,000 views? Yes, I think about stuff like that.

@Roberta,
14 Kentucky Derby Winners' photos

There's a neat photo of Swaps in there. As a thirteen year old, I picked him out from the parade to post when visiting a playmate's house when the family was starting to watch the Derby on tv. Well, that did it - I liked horse racing after that, though today I have various qualms about the horses safety.

@ossobuco,
Thanks, osso. I enjoyed looking at every picture. All wonderful. But there's a special place in my heart for Secretariat. I can look at pictures and films of the Belmont Stakes endlessly. All these years later and I'm still in awe. Awe, I tell ya. Sigh.

@Roberta,
Me too, we're twins at that. Makes me cry when I haven't seen it in a while and then see it again.

A jockey I read about as being obscure (except that he won with the same horse at Santa Anita, like, what? winning at S.Anita is not obscure) - Mario Gutierrez - won the Derby on I'll Have Another.

Ex and I used to make a day of it, go watch horses there a bit and then cross the street and walk the LA Arboretum. Sometimes the peacocks out did the crowd noise from the track area.

@ossobuco,
I get choked up too. Strange but true.

I've been to Aqueduct and Saratoga. Loved the horses. Loved the racing. Loved the atmosphere. Loved winning. When it comes to gambling, I'm a total nut. Superstitious, instinctive, meshuga. I won a lot. Don't mess with what works. Crazy superstitious as a gambler.

@Roberta,
Of course. I didn't pick Swaps out of the post parade because of anything about his lineage, racing history, or looks. I didn't understand any of that stuff then, though I had read the Black Stallion series. I liked the name, quite snappy. I started reading the sports pages just after that.

Huh, the photo is of Secretariat. But the article is up to date.
