I looked up boobies. Couldn't find them We need Francis or Rosborne. One of them is bound to know.

BTW, don't bother googling white bird, blue head, curlicue feather. Bupkis.

@Roberta,
Never heard of them either but this is (well, was) a baby tyrannosaurus rex, recently unearthed in Bavaria; cause of death under investigation:

Supposed to be a bird ancestor.

@High Seas,
High Seas, Little Otto was found almost completely intact. Amazing.

Scientists have been talking about birds and dynasaurs for a long time. This might give them some additional info.

@rosborne979,
I take your word for it. I knew you'd know. I always assumed that herons were bigger birds.

These are little beauties.

The posture of the birds in the photo is a bit unusual for them, and the habitat looks unusual as well. But I don't know any other birds with red eyes, black caps, tassel feathers and feet like that. It's possible they are a sub-species of some type, but it's hard to get much more information just from a single photo. It would also help to know where that photo was taken, but I don't think there's enough info in the photo to figure that out Smile

Roberta? Is this a firefly in its larval stage? It doesn't appear to have any wings. AND not knowing the scale, it looks very large for a firefly or at least the fireflies I'm familiar with.

@tsarstepan,
Lampyridae (fireflies), found around the world. The wingless adult female is the glowworm of literature, especially Lampyris noctiluca (the "Glow-worm" proper of British English) found in most of Europe. In this species the male flies but does not glow. In some areas, a Firefly can also refer to members of the Luciola genus in the same family, found commonly throughout Europe, in which both the males and the flightless females glow.

He's not hiding - his airline never provided an eye mask against daylight intruding while he wants to take a nap, so he's doing the best he can!

rosborne, You animal maven you, I checked out black-crowned night herons. (Hey, I'm a responsible person.) You are correct.

I love dem boids.

dj, I owe you a dollar? When I contacted rosborne about the herons, I said that I bet a nickel that he would know. You don't get a dollar if I don't get my nickel. Loving the first bunny. Definitely looking for something good. The otter with the face leaves is a trend setter. You'll be seeing dead leaf millinary on every fashionable otter by the end of November. I'm having a little trouble making out the bunny face in the second picture. No problem with the second wonderful otter face.

tsar, dj's response to your question is better than anything I could provide. I was just looking for something that lights up. Glow worm. Sounds good to me.
