@Roberta,
That happens to me sometimes. I right click on the 'x' and choose 'properties' from the dropdown menu, then copy the url and paste it into my browser. The photo shows up even on A2K after I do that, as well as showing me the photo in a separate window.

This one made me smile Smile

Harry S Truman and Feller
The 33rd President once famously said, "You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog." Evidently he didn't care much for friends, as he regifted a cocker spaniel, given to him as an unsolicited Christmas present in 1947, to the White House physician. Dog lovers around the country assailed the President for surrendering Feller, who came to be known as the Unwanted Dog

John F. Kennedy and Shannon, Clipper, Charlie and Wolf
Dog lovers all, the Kennedys built a special play area near the West Wing for their children and the family pets. J.F.K. was the first President to request that his dogs come out to meet the presidential helicopter when he arrived at the White House.

Australian leaders don't often go the pet route (at least publicly) I guess they're too busy feeding their 'attack dogs of left or right persuasion'. Former PM however did have Abby the GR and Jasper the cat feature in a children's book

@Roberta,
I've been fond of raccoons - I used to call our old victorian storefront raccoon Raccy - but when we had a young raccoon stuck under bookshelving (long story) in the hallway and called the wildlife people, the woman came out with heavy mits almost up to her shoulder..

Like those last two pics...

When we lived in Hodge and I had my cat shelter a whole family of racoons came up to the porch every night to eat leftover catfood. Johnny and I would watch them for hours. The daddy (I guess he was the dad, he was the biggest) would reach in an unlatch the screen door and open the door. I miss that. I'll look to see if I still have any pics of that.

JFK had a lot of pets. He had a poodle named Gaullie, a Welsh Terrier named Charlie, a cat named Tom Kitten, a canary named Robin, two parakeets named Bluebell and Maryblle, Macaroni the pony, Tex and Leprechaun (also ponies), two hampsters - Debbie and Billie, a mutt named Pushinka (gift from the Russian premier), a cocker spaniel named Shannon, a mutt named Wolf, a German Shepherd named Clipper. Also, Butterfly, White Tips, Blackie and Streaker - all offspring of Pushinka and Charlie, Zsa Zsa the rabbit and a horse named Sardar.

Whew. Something to aspire to.

Apparently Abe Lincoln's dog Fido was the first ever photographed. Would I be right thinking that's why 'Fido' is the generic dog name (like 'Acme' is the generic company name)?

@hingehead,
Hingehead, I did some googling. Fido in Latin means I trust. Lincoln named his dog Fido for that reason. According to more than one source on Google (I don't know how reliable), Lincoln's having a dog named Fido did popularize the name. Thanks for asking (and for the photo). Live and loin, I always say.

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01830/baby-badgers_1830870i.jpg
Three baby badgers nestle in the hands of Pauline Kidner at Secret World Wildlife Rescue in Somerset. They were found abandoned in a barrel when floods battered Wales a week ago. Rescue workers say their mother detected the oncoming danger and moved them to higher ground to stop them from drowning. A local found them mewing while stashed inside the barrel in a hedgerow. With mum nowhere to be seen they alerted Secret World who took them in.
