@Roberta,
There is an interesting theory on the evolution of stripes. It is that they started off as spots on the young. The young need to hide, and the easiest camouflage to evolve would be spots. From that, all other camouflages develop. Many species of cat have their young with spots though the adult has stripes like the little piglets.
