@firefly,
A pretty Alpaca cocking his head toward the operatic sound of the Tanager singing "Figaro!" and two gorgeous tigers thinking "sounds like lunch." Laughing

Beautiful photos from everyone!

@djjd62,
omigod, dj, I haven't heard that expression in a dog's age. But it applies. This thread gives me the vapors, and if you've ever been vaporized, you know how painful it can be.

@Roberta,
one of my favourite times at the Toronto Zoo involved a baby elephant and a baby hippo, the two enclosures were near each other and at one point only a slatted fence separated them, the baby hippo was resting in the shade by the fence, the baby elephant picks up a stick and starts poking the baby hippo through the fence, baby hippo starts crying, mom comes running over starts bellowing, mom elephant comes over, takes stick away from her kid and pushes him away, the two moms make some noise at each other and then everything calms down

a few minutes later i notice that the baby elephant is slowly sidling his way over to the fence, grabs the stick, and away we go

kids are the same all over i guess

@djjd62,
Wonderful story about the 'kids', dj!!

...But there's more to these pictures than meets the eye, as the children and the polar bears are separated by 10-inch thick plexiglass at Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat, Canada, in an attempt to promote awareness about the animals. The sanctuary only takes in rescued bears from the wild and through letting visitors get so close they hope to help understanding and reduce hunting.

Irish, I had a feeling the kid would be ok. Glad to see the feisty bunnies.

dj, Laughing. You're right. Kids are kids.

I had the honor of meeting a Bronx celebrity named Tus. She was an Asian elephant at the Bronx Zoo. I petted her on membership night. A wonderful sensation. She was a sweety, but I admit to being a little afraid. She was very big.

Foster family helps baby cheetahs survive
Smithsonian staff steps in to help rear cubs to increase chances of survival

The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute welcomed two furry new additions. Two cheetah cubs were born at the Virginia facility on Dec. 6 and Dec. 16 to two different mothers.

Although zoo staff say the tiny cats are now doing well, it was rough going for the cubs at first. Both babies were single births, a circumstance that can be problematic.

When cheetah mothers give birth to only one cub, they can't produce enough milk to keep the baby alive. In the wild, cheetah mothers will typically let these single babies die. The mothers will then breed again soon thereafter. But thanks to some human intervention, both zoo cubs have survived.

When Zazi, the second cheetah to give birth, also produced only one cub, "we decided it was the perfect opportunity to give both cubs a chance at survival as one litter under her care without any additional interference by us," Crosier said. "Only a few institutions in North America have ever successfully cross-fostered cheetah cubs and this is a first for SCBI."

This newly created litter of two will likely help stimulate milk production from Zazi. Indeed, researchers have observed both cubs nursing from the 9-year-old mother cheetah.

These births are especially significant, as cheetah births in zoos across the country have dwindled over the past five years, worrying animal care managers about the sustainability of the North American population in human care. More than one-third of the female cheetahs that are part of a national effort to breed the big cats are older, and researchers have found that after eight years of age they do not reproduce well.

These two monkeys appear to be enjoying a game of 'peek-a-boo' during playtime in the forest at Monkey Forest Park in Ubud Bali, Indonesia. Just like human children, the pair entertained themselves while their mothers were grooming nearby. They were snapped by Anne Young on a visit to the popular tourist destination. I wonder if I will ever stop being amazed by all the animals? It seems every single day there is a creature I didn't know about or I learn something new about ones I did know of. I love this thread!

Shows ya how much I know. Can't even tell the difference between a royal antelope and dik dik.

Thanks for the wonderful pics, you guys.
