@ossobuco,
What a horse! My trainer is training one of Secretariat's great-great (I think it's only two greats) granddaughter. He said she doesn't run, she flies!

@ossobuco,
Wonderful video. When I saw Roberta's photo I was trying to estimate how many lengths Secretariat won by. I said 20 and Mr.Irish said, no, it's more than that. He was right...again lol.

These amazing embryonic animal photographs of dolphins, sharks, dogs, penguins, and elephants are from a new National Geographic Documentary called “Extraordinary Animals in the Womb”. The show’s producer, Peter Chinn, used a combination of three-dimensional ultrasound scans, computer graphics and tiny cameras to capture the process from conception to birth. They are the most detailed embryonic animal pictures ever seen.

AP Photo T-Boy, a six week old nutria, referred to by zookeepers as a cajun groundhog, comes out of his hole and looks for his shadow on a mini Mardi Gras float at an event that was a twist on Groundhog's Day at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011. According to zookeeper Paul Benoit, T-Boy saw no shadow and New Orleans can expect a mild spring and a warm Mardi Gras.

Placentas fascinate me. I wish I understood their structures. Why to they seem to have seams and ridges?

@firefly,
osso, Yup, I know you love that Belmont Stakes picture. Thanks for the video. Still has a powerful effect on me.

Arella Mae, I'd heard that Secretariat hadn't sired many speedies. Glad to hear that one is a flyer.

Irish, I'm not gonna go look it up, but I think the it was more like forty lengths. Amazing! Thanks for the groundhog wannabe.

dj, Love your backyard photos. These are wonderful. Thanks mucho.

firefly, In a woid, WOW! I know that there's one breed of shark where the babies in the womb eat one another until there's only one left. Can't remember which one. Great, great pictures. Thanks a lot.

Friday morning, I saw an industrious bird, poking its beak repeatedly into the lawn grass. I did not see it immediately and it either ignored or was unaware of my approach. A couple of more steps and I could have walked on it. We were on a collision course, until I moved to the side. It was tiny, grey, with a red dot on its head. I don't recall seeing one before. Anybody got a clue what it is?

Edgar, I did some looking around. Couldn't find what you described. Sorry. There are some bird identification sites on google. Maybe you could find it there.

@edgarblythe,
I looked around online, too, but didn't see one that exactly matched your description. One came close, but was much larger than you describe -- some kind of finch. Some great 'Birds of Texas' websites out there, though, with fabulous photos.

@Irishk,
I don't know that this is typically a Texas bird, since I don't recall seeing one before. The same day it appeared, flocks of Robins came in. We see them sometimes two times each year. They remind me of chickens the way they run around.

Found it. A ruby crowned kinglet. The pic I found does not display the red spot on its head very well.

@edgarblythe,
Success!

One of the birds I remember most from visiting Texas are those beautiful white Egrets. So graceful looking! Also the Pelicans from around the coast. I have a photo somewhere that I took of a row of Pelicans perched on a row of pilings that were stuck in the water for some reason. They were just resting there with nary a care in the world.

@Irishk,
Yes, we have some wonderful birds in Texas. I used to see them on the gulf quite a lot, but recently just see what passes through town and the local lakes. Still a good variety.
