A family dog faces off against a fox in Lisiki, Russia on Wednesday (January 26).

Maxim Kurguzov, aged 10, was playing outside when the fox crossed a frozen lake and set upon the family’s chickens - killing one before turning on the boy.

Shrek, the family’s dog, gallantly leapt to Maxim’s rescue, fending off the intruder with a series of bites to the head.

Dad Alexey, a professional photographer, ran outside to grab his son before picking up his camera and snapping the stand off, which lasted 25 minutes.

An eight-year old tiger named Girl lies on an operating table to be prepared for surgery at the University Leipzig, Germany. Veterinarians succesfully implanted a hip joint prothesis in the animal. The Malayan Tiger suffered from arthrosis and lameness. According to the University, it was the world's first hip joint prothesis transplantation in a tiger. Picture: EPA

Do female hippos go through menopause? And is a 44+ year old female hippo a cougar?

@Arella Mae,
What have I started? Shocked Even the otters were at odds with each other. And the dog and the fox. Of course the beautiful cheetah babies and the bunny make up for it. Also, the hippos. Is romance in the air?

I've seen that squirrel before--following that path to get a few nuts. For goodness sake, put the nuts on the ground and give the rodent a break. Great to see how smart it it, though, isn't it?

Wishing the tiger well.

Love dem snow monkeys. There's a wonderful snow monkey exhibit in Central Park. Friends have had to drag me away.
