Caribou, Wouldn't it be, well, magic, to soar the way vultures do. And a red-winged blackbird can transport you from winter to summer. Smiling. You mention their song. Maybe some day I'll hear one sing.

Found a mistake. Embarrassed This should have been addressed to littlek. Sorry.

I've been watching two online peregrine falcon nesting sites. The one in PA has a bird with eggs. I've bonded (one sidedly) with this bird. While I was looking for a photo, I got the impression that there are a variety of such sites around the country as some of these birds become urbanized. Here's a photo of a city peregrine falcon.

I saw wild asses in the Planet Earth series. Wanted to represent one here. It was with some trepidation that I entered "wild ass" in google. Very pleasantly surprised. Only a couple of tushies showed up--nothing very wild.

Glad you like them olga. I did a bit of reading about what determines head color. Genetic dominance kind of thing, similar to what determines eye color in humans.

Why does this stuff interest me? Dunno. Guess I'm just weird.

I realize this thread is supposed to deal with "beautiful animals", but I encountered an animal so bizarre-looking today, so grotesquely hideous, that, in its own way it displayed a certain degree of beauty.

I sat on the park bench and studied this creature for a great length of time as I sipped my coffee.

Occasionally I would be distracted by the sound of the passing traffic or a squirrel or duck chattering or honking away, pleading for a tidbit from the popcorn bag which sat by my side.

During these moments I would ignore, or temporarily forget about the hideous, marauding creature, which was busy nosing around in a rotted tree, and I would attend to the animals at my feet.

Only after the squirrel and duck had been sated did I return my gaze to the hideous apparition from the animal kingdom and begin my study anew.

At one point the animal stared at me and our eyes locked for a moment. I could detect confusion in the creature's eyes. It seemed to be trying to grasp its reason for existence, then the light faded from its now-vacant eyes and it went back to nosing around in the rotted log.

I took a quick snapshot with my camera of the beast before it went back to its foraging....

It was fortunate I had film in my camera and was able to offer you people the evidence.

Otherwise, who would have believed such a creature walked among us?
