High Seas, I'm painfully aware of the endangered status of big cats, small cats, and noncats. In my corporate life I was a member of and contributor to the Nat Geo, the NY Zoological Society, the American Humane Society, and the ASPCA. Nowadays, I can't afford to make charitable contributions. (I've got enough trouble scraping together enough money to pay my rent.) But I maintain my interest and concern. Thanks for the Nat Geo link.
Irish, What a boid. I wonder what it feels like to have one sitting on your arm--aside from heavy. And yes, believe it or not, I knew that elephants play polo. I'm a fountain of useless information.
firefly, Delightful, wonderful photos. I especially like the third one. What could be better than a day at the beach with mom. Thanks for sharing.
Euro, Fantastic glorious photos. Smiling big time. Question: Is the white dog a samoyed? Love the painted horse and the cat in the coat.
Edgar, That's not really a Yoda bat, is it? If it is, I can certainly see how it got it's name. If it isn't, they should consider renaming the species.
Merry Christmas to you also! Isn't it amazing the attachment we can form with our animals? Every one of mine, whether cat, horse, dog, or mule I consider my children, each with their own personalities and special way of bringing joy into my life.
They give us loyalty, unconditional love and are always happy to see us.
You can get that nowhere else.
Sounds like a nice little family you have there, you're blessed.
And that's not all - animals also hear ultra-low frequencies we can't detect, giving us early warning of earthquakes. Graph is data downloaded by a French satellite on polar orbit (blue line on map) and shows the sharp rise in ultra-low radio frequencies starting one month before the Haiti earthquake:
Quote:
.....two stages: first we filter the signal keeping only the very low frequencies and afterwards we eliminate its trend using techniques of Singular Spectrum Analysis, combined with a third-degree polynomial filter. As it is shown, a significant increase in energy is observed for the time interval of 30 days before the strong earthquake. This result clearly indicates that the change in the energy of ULF electromagnetic waves could be related to strong precursory earthquake phenomena. Moreover, changes in energy were also observed 25 days after the strong earthquake associated with strong aftershock activity.

I am blessed indeed. There is nothing like driving into my driveway and seeing those seven dogs wagging their tails as if they are saying, "Yayayay!!! Mom's home!"

@eurocelticyankee,
German shorthaired pointers are my favorite dogs next to beagles and corgis.
They are the greatest as (the ones I have known) they think their small enough to be actual lapdogs. They're mid-sized dogs and somewhat gangly so they tend not to fit on most laps. But the ones I knew tried to get up close and comfy.
Flocke the polar bear eats a frozen herring birthday cake with icicles in the form of candles to celebrate her third birthday at the Marineland aquatic park in Antibes, southeastern France.
Euro (sorry, I don't know what to call you. Your name is a longy.) Ben is a beauty. I love the look on his face.
tsar, Some dogs have strange ideas about laps. My cousin had many large dogs. One of the smallest was a boxer, who loved to sit on people's laps. I was visiting, and Tige was in my lap. When she jumped off, I saw Cinnamon (a great Dane) looking at me. She turned around and backed onto my lap. Although her feet were on the floor, her tush was in my lap. I laughed. She did the best she could.
Love the polar bear treat.
High Seas, Yup, I know that many animals have far superior senses to ours and can detect all kinds of things, including earthquakes. Amazing stuff. I believe that some dogs use their sense of smell to detect certain kinds of cancers. Amazing.
Those of you with pets, especially you, Arella Mae, how I envy you. Sigh. This is the longest I've ever been without a pet. Sometimes it's almost physically painful. I open the door, and bupkis. Sigh.
Ben's not content with you're lap alone, he has to nestle into your neck, stretch out fully, upside down And if he can he pushes you off the settee, but he's such a vibrant, happy dog, you forgive him.
G.S.P,s I would say are one of the best hunting dogs in the world.
Ben walks most days with two Beagles, Fred & Libby.
