Love that patio dog scene, Roberta. Looks like a nice place to relax, and read.

Liked that smiling giraffe so much that I decided to look for other smiling animals.

Leafhoppers:

Roberta: These beautiful leafhoppers that you posted are called Graphocephela, and another common name is the sharpshooter. They injest large quantities of plant sap for the sugar and trace elements, much more than they need for the sugar alone; therefore, they excrete a sugar-rich liquid called "honeydew." If you look at the insect through a loupe or good magnifying glass, you'll see what looks like a tiny gun barrel sticking from its butt shooting out little droplets of honeydew; therefore, the sharpshooter.

Coluber, I've heard about shooting from the hip, but never from the butt. Thanks for the info. I love that kind of stuff and enjoy learning new things about animals. (Shoulda said I enjoy learning new things about anything.)

In honor of your post and the info, I'm adding the coluber constrictor to the photos of beautiful animals.

sharpshooter... aren't they the fellows complicating life in the vineyards of California? Will look it up. Thinking lace-winged sharpshooter...

Osso, Checked out lace wing sharpshooter on Google. No such thing (that I could find). There are glass winged sharpshooters and lace wings (a whole other animal).

I'm posting this photo not because it's so gorgeous but because this beaver lives in da Bronx. In da Bronx River! Exciting news. Here's the link to the thread. If you're interested, read Setanta's link to the story.

I was hoping to find photos of whooping cranes whooping and warblers warbling.

Instead I found whooping cranes flying and warblers bathing. C'est la vie.

Thanks for letting me know about the serval, dj. That's the second time that picture has disappeared. Thanks for the replacement. I'm gonna post the original again, just in case it disappears again.

Also, thanks for the photos and the info about the toygers. They're cute/beautiful.
