@Francis,
Salmon: Wrong place at the wrong time!
Bear: Right place without needing a dinner reservation!

Anglerfish species new to Greenland include the peculiarly appendaged Linophryne bicornis, such as this specimen hauled up from a depth of 4,685 feet in 2009. Anglerfish typically sport long protuberances, which can be waggled to lure other fish close enough to be swallowed whole.

@Arella Mae,
tsar, Gorgeous mother and baby jaguar. The kid's name is Ward? As in Cleaver? I ain't buying the ninja slug thing. It's not wearing black. Who do they think they're kidding? That's one spectacular looking snake. The common name for the reptile is Kopstein. (I googled it.) Really beautiful.

osso, Da fish is getting ready for da big day. Spawning and dying. What a life. The otter pups are lovely, sweet, and ready for mischief. (Aside to tsar: I think the otters prefer sushi to grilled.)

Francis, All I see is a red x and a URL. I tried to copy the address to see the pic. No luck. I've seen the picture of the salmon jumping into the bear's mouth. My kind of hunting. Not a lot of energy wasted. I marvel at the timing of the photographer. Looked and clicked at just the right moment.

Arella Mae, I've seen angler fish before. This one's a doozy.

Another new species found in New Guinea. A jumping spider:

@Roberta,
Richard Dawkins's book An Ancestor's Tale has taught me about a team of Sibirian zoologists who bred a line of silver foxes to dog-like tameness. The point was to examine the domestication of wolves into dogs and see what else happens when you breed a wolf-like animal for tameness. As it turned out, breeding for tameness had interesting side effects. In addition to being tamed like dogs, they started barking like dogs, their furs became brindled like dogs', and some of the fox's ears became soft like dogs'.

But I digress. For purposes of this thread, of course, the only thing that matters is that they're cute. Here's a couple of young ones:

Thomas, Go ahead and digress. That was tres interesting. And I love the picture. Thanks, amigo.

TTH, I doubt that sea lions sleep underwater, but they can certainly relax under there. Thanks for the pic.

@Izzie,
Where have you been? On the Road to Mandalay where the flying fishies play?

If that thing can really jump?! I will never intentionally visit New Guinea to find out how far.

Poifect little ladybug, Iz. Thanks.

Not exactly flying fish but definitely flying fish, if you know what I mean. Flying tuna. Beautiful shot. Speaking of flying fish, my father returned to the US after WWII on a banana boat. He said that the flying fish would take off and land in the boat.

tsar, Such lovely avians right here in Noo Yawk. Wonderful to see. Thanks, kid.

@Roberta,
the bitty puma is wonderful, wonderful.

I haven't even looked at this series yet - I know it will be good. Magnum's series (in Slate) today is on horses.
