Best Wishes for 2010 Roberta, hopefully this doesn't happen (but a visit from a bird of paradise might be nice)

Quote:
An unlikely friendship, perhaps, but one no less true: A dog and a wild boar piglet have become chums. Their story began when the piglet was found abandoned in the woods near Ehringhausen in rural southwestern Germany. Fireman Wilhelm Karl Dahlhaus and his family adopted the baby boar and raised him by hand. Christened Manni, the boar developed a friendship with another young household inhabitant, a Jack Russell terrier named Candy.

Thanks, Alex and dj, for the glorious boids. Thanks, tsar, for the awesome twosome.

Here's one of my favorite birds of paradise. The first time I saw it, I said, "What the hell is it?" Now I know.

The superb bird of paradise showing off for his lady love:

Did I ever mention that I love dem boids? I do, you know.

I've been browsing the winners of Nikon's photomicrography today and came across this beautiful animal:

I saw this guy on my way off-Cape this morning. Anyone know what type of raptor he is? The most common we have there are red-tails. Next are sharp-shinned hawks and ospreys. But, he looks more like a peregrine falcon than the others and they don't 'do' the cape.

@littlek,
I don't know him, but I don't know raptors that well. Fine photo, love it.

@littlek,
had a beautiful hawk on the clothes line pole this morning, tried to get a pic and the camera batteries were dead, found new batteries and just stepped out the door as quietly as possible, the hawk turned it's head, saw me and was gone

@djjd62,
You'd think that as predators they'd be less squirrely.

I'm now pretty sure it's a young red tail.

The facial patch makes it look a bit like a Peregrine (except that the dark patch doesn't extend above the eye), but the wing feathers and posture are all Red-Tailed. I think it's a juvenile red-tailed hawk.

boomer, That's one doozy bug! Wow and thanks.

littlek, I'm in the hawk camp. Great pic. Thanks.

dj, Don't know what I'm gonna do with you. You see an animal; you don't have your camera. Now you've got the camera but no batteries. Sighing big time. And happy new year, kid.

Ok, red-tail by mutual consensus (is that an oxymoron?).

Roberta - that blue-bird is vivid!

Ain't it though? I've been looking around for new little gems. Never heard of a bluetail, although I have heard of blue tails.
