@AbbieMcKenley,
This guy (well, I dunno about the sex thing with them) is oddly loveable. Almost the perfect toy if made in a squishy but not too squishy manufactured product. Hope no toymaker gets ahold of that idea.

I'm concerned about the drool - I suppose that is normal.

Rare Feline Found on Tsushima
Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009

NAGASAKI (Kyodo) A rare wildcat has been found for the first time on the southern island of Tsushima in Nagasaki Prefecture, confirming the species' existence there for the first time in more than two decades, conservation officers said.

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/images/photos2009/nn20091231a6a.jpg

It had been feared the highly protected Tsushima leopard cat, one of two species of wildcat found in Japan, had completely disappeared from Tsushima's southern island, while around 100 are believed living on the northern island.

Officers of the Tsushima Wildlife Conservation Center said the 1.13-kg male, thought to have been born only last spring, was found in a weakened state Monday on the property of a company in the town of Izuhara by an employee, who notified authorities.

Staff from the conservation center, which was established by the Environment Ministry to study the Tsushima leopard cat and assist in recovery of the critically endangered species, were summoned to the scene.

They said the rescued feline, apparently suffering malnutrition, is being nursed back to health at the center.

Leopard cats leave their mother's home range six or seven months after birth, at which time they must struggle to survive on their own.

The Tsushima leopard cat, about the same size as a domestic cat but with a white spot on the back of each ear, is thought to have arrived on Tsushima from the Asian continent about 100,000 years ago.

Somehow, i don't think this one's real, more likely a successful photoshop.
Pretty cool all the same.

Hi Abbie and welcome to a2k. Thanks for the blobfish and the adorable marmosets.

dj, The info on the rare feline is greatly appreciated, as are the the pics.

Please gang. Let's stick to real animals. I think nature is diversified enough that we don't need use photoshopped images. Yes, I know. I'm not only a pain in the ass, but I'm also a tight ass--especially with respect to this thread.

@Roberta,
I read today that cheetahs are the only cats that can't retract their claws.

is that true, B?

@Rockhead,
Surely, that one never does.

I've also heard that cheetahs are the only cats that persue prey, rather than stalk and ambush. Think there's a connection.

Yes, it's true. Other felines use their claws as weapons. Cheetahs use their claws to help them dig in and run faster, so the claws are permanently out. It makes them less lethal and lots faster.

Yes, Roger. There is absolutely a connection, although cheetahs will stalk until they're close enough to catch. They're sprinters, not in the chase for the long term (like canids). Cheetahs are also more likely to hunt during the day rather than at night. They're unique in the feline family. They also lose their prey to lions and hyenas with some frequency. Cheetahs sacrificed heft for speed. They can't stand up to larger carnivores, and unlike leopards, they can't climb trees (nonretractable claws). So when they catch something, they eat fast.

I used to kvetch (there's a shock) that wildlife tv always showed cheetahs in slow motion. Then I saw one at regular speed. Whah? What happened? Where is it? I'm never satisfied (another shock).
