re: Sloths, ONCE a week? whoa....

I guess they have very slow metabolisms. Or I could be wrong. Much of the info I have is from watching wildlife tv shows. Only some of it is from reading. I'll see if I can find confirmation on the Web.

My very first school report was on coati. It was in fourth grade; we were being taught to use the encyclopedia in the elementary school library. I picked the volume starting with C - dunno, my last name starts with C - and the book opened with the page describing coati. Voila! I wonder if I plagerized...

That anteater is quite the handsome animal. Looks sort of like a mid fifties automobile... or, better, they look a bit like it does.

Now sloths I can understand.

Thanks, Rosborne, for the beautiful monkey. What a face.

Did some reading about sloths. Fascinating stuff. They spend most of their lives hanging upside down. In fact they even have babies upside down. Their grip is so strong and so effortless that they often die and remain hanging upside down. This is one of the reasons that they are rarely hunted by humans. The human shoots the sloth, but it won't fall to the ground. As to the weekly "relief," here's a quote from Wikipedia: "They come to the ground, to urinate and defecate, only about once a week." Three natural enemies listed: humans, jaguars, and harpy eagles.

Speaking of harpy eagles, I believe that these are the largest of the eagles and are quite impressive looking. Take a gander:

More from South America--red and blue macaws eating clay.

A toucan. I've never seen one this color before.

And a rhea, South America's largest bird. It's flightless and related to the ostrich of Africa and the emu of Australia. btw, emus and rheas are great crossword puzzle words.

Individually they are not much to look at, but when assembled around a vat of milk they offer one of the most breathtakingly beautiful animal displays one will ever see...

Happy Australia Day, dadpad and all other Aussies. Consider yourself indulged. Can't go wrong with a roo, koalas, and that wonderful crossword puzzle word the emu.

Gus, the slender loris has an amazing face. But frankly it doesn't look all that slender to me. As for the rats, the site at which the photo was taken is, I believe, a temple in India at which rats are worshipped.

dys, The slow loris is a beauty. Thanks.

In honor of Australia Day, here's another of Australia's amazing boids--the cassowary.
