Thanks. I petted an elephant. It does feel rubbery (but smooth). It had very thick wiry hairs that were almost like thorns. The elephant I touched was a bit dusty too.

Hmmm. I had a client who spent a fair amount of time around manatees and, if I remember right, wrote a book about them. Can't find her name quickly on google - oh, well.

What a nice experience you had..

rosborne, Thanks for the three glorious birds. Dem boids of paradise are something. (I'm adding another below.)

Owls, the great silent flyers. I think I recognize the great horned owl, but the second owl has me stumped. Do you know what kind of owl it is?

Here's another bird of paradise:

Tawny frogmout camoflage position. They look like a tree branch.

dadpad, I'd heard of frogmouths and might have actually seen a photo or two, but nothing so close. Also the camouflage shot is impressive. After I saw these photos, I did a bit of reading about the frogmouth. Apparently there's some debate as to whether they're part of the owl family. For one thing, they lack owl talons. The face in the first photo is a bit eerie.

How about some water fowl. A baikel teal of South Africa:

And trumpeter swans:

I love this thread! I love looking at all the beautiful animals, alot of which I have never heard before. That first bird of pardise, with the curly tail, made me go "oh wow" to myself.

Just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone....

Caribou, I'm glad you're enjoying this thread. I've enjoyed hunting for different animals to post, and I've enjoyed seeing what everyone else is posting.

rosborne, The ducks are truly gorgeous. Never saw a mandarin duck before. Thanks.

How about a land fowl:

rosborne, Thanks for the green tree boa and the colorful rooster.

Green Witch, I never saw anything like that! Good grief. That's a chicken? Definitely the Las Vegas branch of the family.

How about a few animals from South America?

Here's a sloth. It's my understanding (and I could be wrong) that sloths venture down from the treetops once a week to take a dump. Then they slowly climb back up again.

This spectacular looking critter is a giant anteater.

The coati is the South American relative of the raccoon.
