You may find this baby squirrel cute, but not everyone does.

Quote:
German police have come to the rescue of a man being chased by a baby squirrel.

Officers in the south-western city of Karlsruhe responded to the call for help and arrived to see the creature still terrorising the caller.

The squirrel was taken into custody after it abruptly fell asleep.

A police report of the incident say the persistent rodent has become their new mascot, and has been dubbed Karl-Friedrich.

According to the report, baby Karl-Friedrich is being well looked after in an animal rescue centre.

@glitterbag,
It's a red one as well, they're even soppier than the greys.

If you're ever unfortunate enough to meet my father, don't mention grey squirrels. He hates them because they're an invasive species that displaced reds.

The fact that it happened centuries ago and shooting them will not bring the reds back means nothing. He still thinks they should all be shot.

We trry very hard not to talk about squirrels when we visit, but he keeps bringing the subject of shooting greys up.

@izzythepush,
Well I don’t want to upset your Dad, but all we have around here are grey squirrels.....they run up the tree and my dog runs around and the squirrels just laughs and gives her the finger/paw or whatever it is squirrels gesture with. What I haven’t seen in years are the chipmunks, I think the fox have eliminated the poor critters...and also the domestic cats that prowl around have decimated the baby bunnies. They don’t eat them..they just kill them and then leave them under my patio table...the little bastards. I know, I know it’s just instinct for the cats....but it still puts my panties in a bunch.

@glitterbag,
They're not invasive where you are, don't know if that would make any difference to him though.

Have you seen such a beauty? The Ardennes Draft Horse (Belgium, Luxembourg, France) is considered one of the oldest breeds of draft horse, and is believed to be a direct descendent of the prehistoric Solutre Horse. Their history reaches back to Ancient Rome. Thanks Neneng Gabayno

@Region Philbis,
I googled "most ancient dog breed," and the afghan hound turned up.

@Roberta,
I found this so hard to believe - because dogs evolved (with our help) from wolves and Afghans don't much look like wolves - well not as much as say a Husky. Anyway I *think* from reading a couple of articles that the term 'ancient breed' was used by the American Kennel Club to denote a breed that has been around for more than 500 years (but the first domestic dogs have been traced back to Zhokov Island in Siberia 9,000 years ago and bred as either sled or hunting dogs).

Over the last 200 years we have rapidly twiddled the dog phenotype - so many breeds simply didn't exist before that. And breeds that were a stepping stone to what we have now are gone. The cladogram to the right of this section of the Wikipedia item is interesting, as is the genetic studies reported just below it.

Read the article and see what you think

@hingehead,
These don't exist any more.

Quote:
The Turnspit dog was a short-legged, long-bodied dog bred to run on a wheel, called a turnspit or dog wheel, to turn meat. The type is now extinct. It is mentioned in Of English Dogs in 1576 under the name "Turnespete". William Bingley's Memoirs of British Quadrupeds (1809) also talks of a dog employed to help chefs and cooks. It is also known as the Kitchen Dog, the Cooking Dog, the Underdog and the Vernepator. In Linnaeus's 18th century classification of dogs it is listed as Canis vertigus. The breed was lost since it was considered to be such a lowly and common dog that no record was effectively kept of it.

@izzythepush,
'Extinct' is an interesting word in the context of breeds isn't it? The DNA of the turnspit is still out there reproducing itself. Any breed can spawn with any other breed (though there may be stepladders involved).

In fact every domestic dog in the world could disappear and they wouldn't be extinct - because they are the same species as wolves. Weird.
