I just did something daring and dangerous. I entered "cute puppies" in google. I've been thudding all around the living room ever since. Help. Get the smelling salts. Here's my selection:

@Roberta,
I was curious about the hair tail critter myself. It's a leaf hopper nymph.

@hingehead,
A few years ago NPR had a story about planthopper nymphs and how they have mechanical gears in their legs that are used in jumping. Apparently, they're the first and only known instances of mechanical gears in nature.

I have this trick, where I post it to a nature-lover's group, and call it something completely obviously wrong, and come back in a few hours time. Wink

I have made a bit of a study of arthropods for several years now, and I'm convinced they are actually a robotic alien species.

As an example of this, cockroaches have been wired up, and can be steered remotely, to be used for covert ops, with cameras attached.

Another simple test of this, is to knock down a wasp nest at night time, and see what the wasps do next; nothing is what. You've interrupted their "program" and they have no fall-back system, so they don't 'know' what to do next.

@Builder,
There's a late 19th century naturalist's essay where he described moving a wasp while it was half way through building it's nest - it continued until it 'finished' the other half of the nest in a completely different spot.

@hingehead,
Yes, I picked up on this when I was painting houses, as a young tacker.

I'd knock down a wasp nest, and the wasps would just hang there for days, kind of catatonic.
