I suppose that the name Gary is German in origin but has anyone ever heard of a famous European named Gary?

Might be Irish, as in Garryowen.
So that would be Gaelic. But I don't know what it means. And it has that extra letter.
Or, it might come from Indiana.

@MisterEThoughts,
MisterEThoughts, is it the correct translation for Gary in Russian or does your friend changed his name by chance?

@dov1953,
The name Gary comes from a town in America. This is where Gary cooper took his name from and is classed as the first Gary. That's why the name is popular with males born in the 60s.
America was only invented fairly recently. Most placenames there are borrowed from somewhere else, when they're not Native American names.
I refer you to Guy Mitchell:
Columbus said to the Spanish king
I'll let you in on a mighty fine thing
I'll prove to you that the world is round
United States ain't never been found...
So I think it unlikely that the name Gary came from there.
