Attn Drunks: Don't Buy Toyotas

Toyota is working on the technology for it's vehicles to sense alcohol levels through sweat sensors in the steering wheel:

http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2007/01/03/toyota_creating_alcohol_detection_system/

That's pretty cool. Would be nice if someday it was virtually impossible to be on a road with drunk people. I wonder how many people wouldn't buy a certain car because it would restrict them from being able to drive after having some drinks?

Wow!

Seems really easy to foil, though. ("Honey, did you bring the 'I'm SO not drunk, really!' gloves? Great, I'll have another then <slurp>")

This is good, though:

Quote:
The system could also kick in if the sensors detect abnormal steering, or if a special camera shows that the driver's pupils are not in focus. The car is then slowed to a halt, the report said.

I like how it has implications beyond drunkenness.

OK, the "slowed to a halt" part makes me a little nervous. They're on a freeway, they're drunk, they're oblivious, the car slows to a halt in the middle of the freeway and they can't start it again...

So, how many of us who have a beer , or a glass of wine with dinner are going to be stuck on the side of the road?

You know one thing I like?

A sweet ( usually cheap ) spaghetti sauce on aldente noodles with a tart wine.

not anything elegant.. just a taste combination I like.

THAT would leave me "drunk" according to toyota?
Even though I usually have less then 1/2 a glass?

I am all for the technology though.. but there needs to be some room for people like me.. ya know?

I'm guessing they don't kick in at a glass of wine with dinner level.

Sounds promising, except I had the same thought Sozobe did re mid freeway stop. I trust this has been tested out...

I would hate to think that it would take that long for the sensors to kick in.

One should not be able to reach the freeway that fast .. ?

I think we don't know enough about how it works, or maybe it's just me and I didn't read enough.

I don't know why anyone would want to buy a car like that. I'm old enough to make my own decisions re: driving. I don't ever drive drunkenly but still I don't need Toyota holding my hand like I'm a little boy.

One of the great American pastimes.

You drive down the street, your passenger hangs out the window with a baseball bat, and you smash mailboxes. Good times.

What's wrong with Toyotas?

They're very reliable, get great gas mileage and last forever.

Am I missing something, or was that a joke?
