they came up with prehistoric nuclear devices.
Thus, they killed themselves off.

Actually david, it was boredom that killed them.
Lacking oposing thumbs there was only so much to do with their time,
and since they were the biggest creatures around no one could eat them.

Fact is, by the time the meteor struck they were all dead already, out of boredom.
