I have never heard of a district of Paris called "Marsais". Did you mean Marseille?

Marty, if it IS Marseilles, you must take time to find a busy local restaurant (always a good sign) and try some Bouillabaisse.
Marseilles is famous for it!

Maybe you meant the Marais? That's in Paris, and is the lovely old part of town. Lots of history there.....

Did you mean Le Marais? (The gay district which includes Place de Vosges and St. Croix de la Bretonnerie?)

Yes, I'm not actually gay myself, but my husband took me there for a long weekend once.

No, I'm not either! Definitely. Not even a bit. Oh no. Not me. Just thought I'd make that absolutely clear. In fact I've got a wife and two kids, and they're not either. Razz

[edit] Alternative funny reply:

That's very interesting, not to say painful sounding, but have you been to le Marais?

Mr B and I regularly stay in a gayborhood in New Orleans. Why would that be an issue?

Don't know about hotels, but while you're in the Marais you must check out my favorite café in Paris: the Piment Café on the Rue de Sevigné, just a few blocks down from the Musée Carnavalet.

Actually, Le Marais is a very a bourgeois area and the center of Paris' Jewish lfe.

Besides that, Les Marais is a protected sector (secteur sauvegardé), with many museums, art galleries and historic sites.

Sorry, I've been without internet access for 3 days! Yes, my spelling has gotten me in trouble again. I did in fact mean Marais. I heard in a lecture about Paris travel that the two areas to stay in would be Rue Cluer(sp) or Marais. Marais being the livlier place if we're interested in night life. Let's face it, we're two nearly middle aged(40) women both fresh out of marriages wanting to spend at least one night of our trip on the town.

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated!

The Marais will definitely give you a selection of Parisian nightlife, but it's also super expensive! If you don't mind the sight of 600-euro shoes, I high recommend it. Very Happy

I haven't been commenting since I've never been to Paris (sob!) - but I am interested in the Marais area. Lotta history there, of course.

I have a long time friend who grew wealthier about a decade ago. She and her husband almost bought a well regarded bullding in the Marais a couple of years ago, but didn't. (In theory, I could have visited..)

For atmosphere, you might want to read the police-procedural by Cara Black, Murder in the Marais (put out by Soho Press).

Osso, thanks for replying. From your advice on Italy I'm pretty sure we'll be staying in Parma at least one night.

Marty, when I wrote on that thread, I don't think I had understood you'd been to Italy before. Yadda yadda, I went on and on, as usual. Parma is not a big splashy place. Still, I thought it was elegant.

As far as the trip, I'm hoping to just take in as much as I can. I'm hoping that by time we get to Italy we'll be ready to wind down and just take in the beauty of our surroundings. I've been to Venice but no other Northern Italy places. So the plan is to take the train from Paris, hopefully a stop over in Burgundy, to Milan and rent a car there.

You'll be tuckering out of the I am here now, I have to see stuff business. Chances are you'll find your own stopoff when winding from Milan to the Cinque Terre.

As it is, I still think I see you doing almost too much - but we're different people at different times in our lives.

My last trip was 29 days, 13 cities (for photography/research), but that was punishing. So many of the best times are totally unplanned, unprogrammed. I can easily see doing 10 to 29 days in one or two places/one or two areas..
