I'd leave it alone for now. I like it a lot myself, and have no idea if it is worth significant money - but it has aesthetic value.

It could be worth getting appraised by one of the major appraisal firms, and that costs money, guessing a few hundred dollars.

Lightwizard is a fellow who posts on a2k who knows a lot about appraisal but he hasn't posted lately.

I'll try to see if I can find a link for what he has said about appraisal.

Or... someone else may have more knowledge than I do...

OK, here's a link, the first one in list I found by searching 'appraisal' and lightwizard as the author. Not exactly the same circumstance, but may apply for you -

He doesn't personally do appraisals, that I remember, but the information in that post I gave you a link for should give you a head start on people in your area who you might look into doing an appraisal for you. (You can presumeable ask them first how much they charge.)

Where did you get this?

Is there a date anywhere on it? On the frame, maybe?

It's certainly similar to a Turner....

I thought that too, Ellpus, but then it also looks like one of mine, and I'm not any Turner. The frame is interesting too.

I have no idea about the artist but its a painterly scene. I love the dado and pegged stretcher. Im gonna say its from an Arts and Crafts era , even though the frame looks like it was "married" after the painting, because 2 corners look like theyve been routed. and the back right of the frame looks like its been shaved a bit to fit the stretcher.

Both the painting and the frame look like real finds, but Ill bet they dont go together.

How big is it" about 10" by 12"?.

But that looks early Victorian to me, Osso. Maybe 1850 or so...and I know you're not quite that old, so it can't be one of yours.

Maybe someone was painting in the style of Turner, as he was a bit of a superstar around that time.

This looks like a quality painting to me, and should get a proper appraisal from a professional.

I'll agree it looks very Turner-y. I'm not so sure that frame isn't contemporary to the stretcher, though I see it's shaved to fit. On the other hand, I'm not sharp enough to say the approximate age of the frame.

Maybe there's some website that describes frame styles over the ages...

Whoever this is by, of whatever monetary value, it's a treasure.

Rich, what I wanted you to notice in the link I gave to a post of Lightwizard's was this sentence -

"The American Society of Appraisers is online and will give you an appraser in your area." I would got to http://www.google.com and when it comes up, type in American Society of Appriaisers.

Presumably you want one with an expertise in 19th and 20th century painting. It might or might not be the same person you talked to before.

I've noticed that Sotheby's and Christie's are in various cities around the country - you might look into that.

That's a Waldo Prickenheimer original! It is a priceless Masterpiece! He never signed his paintings because he was ashamed of his funny name. Why isn't that painting in the Louvre?

That's what I'd want to hear
