I'm running a half marathon!

Oh my gosh, I'm excited and nervous. I picked up my bib number today. This is my first event ever and I'm worried that I'm going to be one of the last to finish. My friend and I trained together but the farthest I've gotten without stopping was about 5 miles. I've done a lot of hiking so I know I'm capable of at least walking 13 miles.
The run is Sunday...wish me luck! Woohoo

Oh, you can do it, and who cares exactly where you place? Taper off on the running for a couple of days before you run, and you'll give yourself a bit of an edge.

I haven't run for years and years, never ran in races. Indeed, our runner here is Joe Nation. (and maybe Sozobe will step up to the plate) .. and he's recently done his first half marathon.

All I can say from vestigial runner's advice, is... don't go out too fast. Also, have fun!!

Yikes, I just checked the weather for Sunday. 33-37 degrees with a 60% chance of rain. I bought some new gear at the marathon expo today, pants, hat and gloves.

New skills. New adventures. You are an admirable and adaptable woman.

At the start of the race you're going to be pumped up. The whole race
atmosphere is very exciting. But don't get carried away and go out too fast.
You'll regret it. Once you get past five miles, take it one water station at a
time. When you get to the water station, slow down to a fast walk -- don't
stop -- take some water, sip it as you walk. Then ease back up to a run and
just work on getting to the next station.

Make sure you are well hydrated before the start of the race!

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

Noddy,
Thanks for that, it means a lot to me. I was just talking to a friend the other day and it dawned on me that everything I went through with the divorce no longer seems like it was yesterday. I'm my own person now!

George,
Good advice, will do!

Marty--

Thanks for the kind words.

I've been where you are now--and where you were yesterday. You're flourishing like a green bay tree. Congratulations.

NOW I know why I woke up at 1:44 AM with a burning desire to go to the gym...!

(Unfortunately the burning desire didn't translate to actually GOING, yet. I seem to need to come up with some sort of goal/ reward. Hmph.)

Great that you're doing this, martybarker, hope you have a great time!

Thanks everyone. My friend that I trained with will be running with me. She is a little faster than me so I told her I'd be OK if she went ahead and met up at the finish. She said"No, we're a team and I'll run at your pace."
Wasn't that a nice thing to do?
I'm heading to bed now and carbed up on pasta for dinner. I'll let you all know how it went.
Thanks for the encouragement!

I woke up at 5am and it was snowing which turned to rain by time I got downtown. Before we got to mile marker 1 we passed a donut shop, what torture! Then at mile 9 some lady had the theme song to Chariots of Fire blasting from her car and there were lots of people cheering us on. It was so much fun.

It was great, its funny about what you said. I was in fact pumped at the beginning but I made sure that I kept my pace and didn't start out too fast.
