All my German friends in the U.S. really didn't get the tipping thing. They were so far off that I was afraid to let them pay even if they wanted to.

By the way, I don't tip on tax, and I hope that servers here realize why. If I go out a pick up a $200 dinner tab, the sales tax is going to be about $15-$20 and would add $4 to $5 the tip. In some places even more due to local "special" taxes. Sorry, ain't happening - and here's a tip - vote for politicians that lower taxes.

Yeah, like the Bush tax cuts that gave the average middle class family about $68.

Did they tip too much, or not enough, or forget to tip when paying with credit card, or did they tip on tax? Very Happy

I have to admit that the concept of adding a tip on that credit card paper thingy was completely alien to me, though. People had to explain it to me.

(Isn't it nice that there are still some cultural differences?)

That comes out to fourteen point five $4 tips.

I bet that's harder than you worked last year.

Chai, you mentioned that people who're fargin' cheap bastiches when it comes to tipping are probably a pain in other ways, and boy howdy are you right on!

I grew up in a really small town and I worked in several different places around town. So I've dealt with the same bunch of people as a librarian, and a sales clerk, and as a waitress...and my God, the cheap S.O.B.s ARE pains in the arse no matter where they are! Laughing They are the same people that try to return shoes they've already worn outside, jeans they bought somewhere else, act huffy when you expect them to know their own pants size in a transparent attempt to make you measure their inseam <shudder>, and donate boxes of books that smell like cat pee and should've just been taken to the dump...

Of course, this doesn't reflect on Reyn, we know he'd never do any of those things!! Very Happy

I agree you cypher about what Reyn and other Candians have said...they are I'm sure totally normal otherwise.

slappy was spot on saying that the bulk of the people posting about this are from the U.S. and that's how our minds work around it. Simply a cultural difference....but like ci said..."when in Rome...."

I figure if wages of a waiter went up to 12 or 15 bucks an hour, the cost on the food on the menu would go up by the same amount a 20% tip would cost, so what's the diff? Plus, as slappy said about incentive, there would be those who would be asking themselves, "how can I make even more? I'm good, I like being a waiter, I want more.

I'll tell you what though, I sure wouldn't put up with what you have to deal with for a lousy 8 bucks an hour. Well, not lousy, but you know what I mean.

$8/hr for being a server is lousy. It can be a tough job.

My friend is a mortgage broker, and did a mortgage for a waiter at a high-end steak place. His REPORTED income was $50K a year. Not bad, if you figure they're pulling in $70K+. Jobs at those restaurants are extremely hard to get though. One of my roomates just got one, and the restaurant ran classes for a month before opening.

A girl who used to clean hotel rooms told me a lot of people tipped...they would leave a couple bucks out usually if they stayed multiple nights.

I've been at a hotel the last couple nights. Should I leave a tip, or just that crusty towel on the floor?

Oh yeah, I always wonder about motel tipping. What does everyone do about that?
