another one of my favorites......

Prospero's final speech from "The Tempest"

"And now my charms are all o'erthrown,
And what strength I have's mine own,
Which is most faint. Now t'is true
I must here be released by you,

Or sent to Naples. Let me not,
Since I have my dukedome got
And pardon'd the deceiver, dwell
In this bare island by your spell;

But release me from my bands
With the help of your good hands
Gentle breath of yours my sails
Must fill, or else my project fails,

Which was to please. Now I want
Spirits to enforce, art to enchant;
And my ending is despair
Unless I be relieved by prayer,

Which pierces so that it assaults
Mercy itself and frees all faults.
As you from your crimes would pardon'd be,
Let your indulgence set me free."

Very Happy

Thanks, Rae!! When I was in college (back in the 70's), I went to London for 3 months on a "study abroad" program. Our program included a week in Stratford-Upon-Avon. It was an awesome program and I saw some great plays. And, I came away with a deep appreciation for Shakespeare!!

Another favorite..... from "Hamlet"

"To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man."

Peace and Love

........And when he shall die
Take him and cut him out in little stars
And he shall make the face of heav'n so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.

Good job, Kara - it fits what's in my memory anyway. Here are some of the bits that are in my head:

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind,
And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.

How now, spirit, whither wander you?

If we shadows have offended,
Think but this and all is mended
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme
No more yielding but a dream.
Gentles, do not reprehend.
If you pardon, we will mend.
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to scape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long.
Else the Puck a liar call-
So goodnight unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends.

No, 'tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as church door, but 'tis enough, 'twill serve. Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.

O churl! drunk all, and left no friendly drop
To help me after? I will kiss thy lips.

But look! The morn
In russet mantle clad
Walks o'er the dew
Of yon high eastward hill.

Break we the watch up.

(I've always enjoyed the transition from the elegant announcement of dawn to the straight-forward order to move on to breakfast.)

Some say, that ever 'gainst that season comes
Wherein our Saviour's birth is celebrated,
This bird of dawing singeth all night long:
And then, they say, no spirit can walk abroad;
The nights are wholesome; then no planets strike,
No fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm,
So hallow'd and so gracious is the time.
