Wearing a veil for just one day ...

Exactly that notion occurred to me Hamburger, and in particular, this:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~flstjohn/shannon/nun.jpg

Here, the face is not covered--however, the hair and all of the rest of the body apart from the face are covered. For nearly two thousand years, and until quite recently, women in conventual orders of the Catholic church lived in circumstances little different from purdah, and wore garments little different than the Muslim veil.

That's what I was talking about re my signing up to become a postulant in the late fifties...

I do now feel that I was "brainwashed", especially since I was talked into it, not believing I had a vocation myself, being rather insistent on that, and only reluctantly accepting 'God's will' when several of my teachers individually discussed my vocation with me. I cannot speak for others who did follow through and became nuns.

This is not true. The Prophet has said:

Quote:
Tell the believers who are men to be chaste in their looking and to keep their sexual impulses under control-a restraint that will make to their greater purity. For God is aware of all they have in had.

One cannot compare that with the Muslim veil, they are opposites. The veil hides all and is proof that the wearer belongs to the husband. The high heels are there to enhance the legs and attract the looks of others.
.

And to Muslim women, the Prophet has said relative to "high heels":

Quote:
Let them not draw attention to their hidden charms by
the way they tap with their legs."

You can't say the same about the wearing of high heels, I'm afraid.

The Qur'an forbids the observant Muslim woman from wearing high heels.

What are the "hidden charms"? Deep pile leg hair?

I remember a discussion, about eight years ago, when I was co-ordinator of an area where only Germans from Russian republics lived (about 2,000).

When asked why they were wearing a veil (that were mostly only women aged 40+), the answer always had been a reference to the bible:
And he says: "Every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered, dishonoureth her head"[1 Cor. 11:5]

These women were Christians?

Talking about Christianity and covering the female head, there was a time, no so long ago, that Catholic women always wore a hat or a veil when attending Church.

Not so anymore, except in the South, where women still try to be ladylike. Laughing

That's still the fact in many European countries, not only in Spain and Italy. (And the reason, why many Americans never see some churches from the inside Laughing )

Did I say that they didn't? Maybe the reason I didn't widen my views on this is because this thread is about muslim veils, so I restricted my comment as such.

Of course other religions love a bit of brainwashing.

One isn't a fully fledged Catholic, for example, unless one has an honours degree in guilt.

All religion is sh*te, as far as I am concerned. It's probably been the cause of 99% of the wars on this globe over the last 600 years or so.

Mennonites, mostly. And "yes", nearly 90% of the Germans from Russia are Christians, about 5% are Jews.

Those were nuns and their outfit was a uniform. Different story, many people wear uniforms.
.
In any case, religious rules are for believers, not the general public.

Do you assert that all Muslim women wear the veil? Ever been to Indonesia?
